New Esquif Solo for 2026, Echo 2.0

I test paddled with my wife and solo a Nova Craft Prospector 15 last summer. It was a fall of the rack special that had been repaired, and it was pretty good solo. If I could convince any of my dogs to enjoy heeled over Canadian style paddling it would likely be a top choice. The beam, rocker...

New Esquif Solo for 2026, Echo 2.0

I watched this video about ten times and finally got to swing by the local shop today to see if they would be getting one this spring. Hope to get a test paddle in one sometime in may. Likely will try and buy one this summer if I like it. The pickings are slim for a general purpose solo for...

New Esquif Solo for 2026, Echo 2.0

I could pretty interested in this as not only a bigger guy, but someone who doesn’t have the budget to add say a phoenix to the roster for the less frequent river trips or as a gunk holing boat. I never even looked at the original echo in person due to my weight and it’s low freeboard and capacity.

Night Fears: Worse with Hammocks than Tents?

For me in the northeast I’m ok if I go east, but everything stays at home if I go west (New York). If I was going to be in brown bear country I’d likely lean auto as well, or double action. Black bear from a size and aggressiveness (or lack there off) the big bore ruger fits my needs. Bear spray...

Night Fears: Worse with Hammocks than Tents?

A 4.5” Ruger Blackhawk with 300 grain pills will go a long way to assuaging any fears about sleeping outside at night in the wild. Hammock or no.

    Pandemic Changed Things

The bike industry and mountain bike trail networks got absolutely slammed for a couple years. Some of the trails are still zoo’s I avoid on the weekends. It’s slowly backing off, and when it comes to buying bikes or bike parts, you can’t beat the sales at the moment. It’s why I choose to build...

    Explain Your Screen Name

It’s an online moniker I have gone by since I had a blog focusing on my commercial maritime career, and now gets used for my photography Instagram, and some forums. Though for shooting related forums and online groups I generally go by Tugboat Door Gunner.

Or when they’re coming to see you everyday! I can thank my trailer trash neighbor for making them so interested in food sources other than my apple trees or berry bushes.

Best Places to Live in the US for Canoeing?

The northeastern north country might not be the very best, but it sure isn’t bad. That is Northern New York, Vermont, NH and Maine.

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

How much weight do you generally have in that Polaris? I’m considering one as primarily a solo boat for me (at 270 pounds) with occasionally a dog or nephew in it.
