    Gardon River, France

Of course. That goes without saying. Those words get you far. I’m talking about the fun of chatting with people in a friendly way, about the weather, about shoe sizes, about the specialty pastry of the area, about rivers, about canoeing. It’s about building bridges. I was in Switzerland for...

    Gardon River, France

People who say « everyone » speaks English, never get out of major cities. This would be a much less enjoyable trip if I didn’t have functional French. It’s fun to be able to have genuine, if brief, conversations that move past buying a baguette.

Welcome. I have paddled the lower Buffalo. Beautiful river.

    Gardon River, France

This ancient Roman aquaduct, built in the first century AD, actually carried water from a spring north of the bridge to Nîmes. It was built with drystone limestone and some of the bricks weigh up to 6 tons, and were put in place with cranes and pulleys. The smaller stones were placed using...

    E-ZPass transponders with cartopped canoes

My transponder is moveable. I just put it in a different spot, where the canoe doesn’t block it, and it seems to work ok.

    Watches or Smartwatches for Tripping?

I had no idea watches could do all those things. I had fun one time on the Suwannee River. I wanted to wear a watch for some reason, I don’t remember why, instead of using the time-telling feature of the iPhone, which I bring along as a camera. However, I had not worn that watch for some time...

    Photo of the day

I found out why canoeing and other activities on the Sorgue River are not allowed during this time. This is a fish preserve and apparently extremely popular with fly fishermen fishing for trout and grayling. So the river is closed during this period, maybe for spawning, to protect the fish. Also...

    Photo of the day

This is the outflow of the fifth largest spring in the world, the beginning of the River Sorgue, somewhat downstream from the source. I was supposed to go canoeing here. Unfortunately, I am here for three days but the canoe rental places do not open for another 10 days. I am staying literally...

Is that what happened. I miss HOOP. I learned a lot from him.

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

I think Benson and Memaquay are onto something here. From what I can tell, these influencers have more influence on getting younger people to try new activities. It’s a different world out there.

Thoughts on buying a dedicated loaner

I do have a loaner, an old Mad River Explorer in Royalex. I loaned it to a couple who wanted to try canoeing. But not with me and not led by me. I made sure they had paddles and pdfs. We have mostly lakes, flat water here. It seems to me this would be a good way to get other folk interested...

    Mégiscane River, Québec

There are no good campsites on the part of the Mégiscane I am reporting on. I did not pass any good campsites. You are seeing the best of the best. There are good sites on the Mégiscane but not on the stretch I paddled.

Canoe cover for epoxy canoe with no gelcoat?

Those canoe covers look great. But in Florida, there would ants’ and wasps’ nest built inside them within a few days. An unpleasant surprise when one removes the cover.

    Mégiscane River, Québec

True. The flames surrounded my hand, but I ended up with basically just a sunburn. I was on bare rock, inches from the river. I never light anything near my tent.
