How Long Have We Been Chatting?

When was the change to this platform? I think I’ve been on here since before 2018, although it may have been under a different username. What I really need to know is what do I get for all my points?

    Winter conversation

IDK Steve, seems like the crowds during Covid stayed in the BWCA afterwards. Part of it’s me getting ancient, not able to go as far as quickly, but if you look at the growth of Ely and other towns, the permanent boom is corroborated. I spent a couple days visiting lakes outside the BWCA and...

    Winter conversation

They disturb the nature of an area forever. New roads and facilities don’t just evaporate afterwards. Bigger everything, from airport expansion to lodging and performance sites become part of the permanent growth of the community. Call someplace paradise, kiss it goodbye. Maybe they’ll...

How Long Have We Been Chatting?

I don’t remember when I came to this forum, but I remember new software after a long time of a different format. So how long has Canoetripping.Net been around? I’m thinking around the millennium or early 2000s.

    Seen This Type of Canoe?

My son found this canoe in a friend’s yard in SC. I’ve never seen a wood frame like this, so I figured more knowledgeable folks here might find this interesting…or not. I have no idea what the hull is made of and my boy did not ask.

Headlamps. Do you guys use 'em?

Yeah, mine are BD storms as well. I used a candle lantern for years, and still miss that soft light and gentle warmth. Just too heavy.

    Bird Management

This is what I’m cleaning out on both ends and along sides (soffits) every day with a pitch fork (note highlighting).

    Bird Management

Cleaned the nests out today and a thought occurred to me: Can a person catch bird flu from breathing in nest litter? Adding a N95 mask to my nest remediation gear.

    Bird Management

Our garbage can gets so nasty my wife won’t take it out. We’ve never been able to utilize the space without covering, hosing, power washing. So far, denying them sedate nesting is the only way to mitigate the white paint on everything. I’ll rake the nests out every day for a couple months...

    Bird Management

I put old cat litter in one end. They just nest on top of it. Snakes it is! Not an anti avian thread, and I’ve planted enough trees on my lot to qualify for the Audubon Society habitat enhancement award,

Opinions on a new boat - Rapidfire, Spitfire 13, Trillium

I don’t like seats on the floor. Hard to get out of.

    Bird Management

Birds make a mess of our carport - it’s like their own condo. I tear nests out every day. This is the heavy season. So now, I’m tarping my canoe, trying to devise a cover for the entire rack and its occupants. I’m wondering if there’s not an effective deterrent to settlement. Maybe used cat...

OK...How about the Wenonah Wilderness solo?

I owned a Wilderness for a decade. It was in the tuffstuff layup, fairly heavy by today’s personal standard. I used it on the river and lakes around here. It worked. Not a tripper due to volume (especially with a dog). Mine had a noisy seat that tipped forward for knee paddling. The...

Safest places to canoe in the USA after a nuclear war

Hard to believe you’ve never heard of pasties. Pronounced “pass-tees”. The lumberjacks from Finnland or somewhere carried them in their shirt pockets for lunch. Filled with turnips and meat. The cafes cover them with gravy because they are typically dry as a camel’s hump. They’ll keep you...

Safest places to canoe in the USA after a nuclear war

No, I meant those turnip things, often covered in gravy. To be fair, Atikokan and International Falls probably aren’t the best Canada has to offer. Montreal was pretty good. Still, tell me a full on attack is coming and I’m going for tacos al pastor.

Safest places to canoe in the USA after a nuclear war

Might be best to flee to Mexico. Better climate, food. SW US might be best off for a bug out. Canada can’t compete in cuisine. Pasties are terrible! Give me a burrito any day!

    Chest Loads

Last trip I double portaged rather than triple portaging. I’m hoping to do that again. Adjustments include adding chest loads. I’m not 100% sure I can do it, but the plan is to use a large fanny pack as a sling pack on my chest along with my camp pack and the canoe. This will contain my...

    Need New Food

I’m going with my dog. He’s not good for carrying stuff, but great at cleaning up and disposing of mistakes. I’m going with 100% freeze dried dinner meals to allow me to portage more, so weight matters. I am looking at more dried fruits. Took dried mangos last year and they were great, until...

    Need New Food

I’m starting to sort through gear and freeze dried provisions for a mid-May trip and feel like I need to shake things up for my lunches and snacks. Anyone have a secret munchable food item that doesn’t weigh a ton? I’m in a rut with gorp, jerky and powdered peanut butter. Thanks.
