    Wind

At what point does it become too windy for those canoes? With no keel, and the relatively narrow hull, I’d guess the are for light winds only.

    Wind

My son sold his a couple years ago. I miss it more than him, but I didn’t pay for the slip, dry dock, electronics replacements, etc. Canoes are a cheaper addiction.

PortagePal to carry paddles and fishing rods

I’m fond of bungee dealy bobs for rods, extra paddle, painters. I keep one in the middle of my fixed portage yoke with a small carabiner to attach my daypack. Lately, I’ve begun using them around the house. Very useful invention.

    Wind

Is it me, or is wind a bigger factor for canoeing over the last few years? I think I missed the best opportunity this week, and it’s still over 10 mph, headed back to the high teens and 20s. I’ve been watching the weather in parts of MN and Ontario too, and it just seems the fronts tend to be...

    Where have we all paddled?

“Where have we all paddled?” There is probably not a place that we all have paddled.

Safest places to canoe in the USA after a nuclear war

Based on this map, I’d say paddling down the Rio Grande in Big Bend NP would definitely allow survival of a massive strike. El Paso would be toast and eventually contaminate the river and park. One would then be faced with climbing out of the canyon to the south and trekking over inhospitable...

Proposed Twin Metals Mine in MN near the BWCA

ppine, The DoA economic analysis determined the project would hurt tourism by introducing traffic, noise and light pollution even before a large scale leak, then it could devastate the tourism economy. The scientific study was cancelled midstream by the first Trump administration, and no public...

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

Sorry, I was at the doc with my wife. Anyway, the dog and wife were in the bow, she was facing the stern, no paddle, just holding the dog who was easily 90lbs alone. They launched into the current and were spinning out of control, the man furiously paddling with little to no effect, then they...

Proposed Twin Metals Mine in MN near the BWCA

This is why the superfund exists. Make taxpayers clean up corporate messes (to the extent possible). Instead of a safety net to protect as it was intended, it’s become part of the business model for polluters. Now that the EPA can’t regulate or prosecute, we’re entering a new age of wildland...

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

A couple years ago, I launched just ahead of an Outfitters’s bus. One young man had a rented canoe for him, his not small wife, and

Proposed Twin Metals Mine in MN near the BWCA

This type of mine has a perfect record of failure to protect. It always pollutes. We can only hope that arm twisting from on high won’t fast track the idiocy. Why is everyone so intent on making everywhere into Ohio?

Proposed Twin Metals Mine in MN near the BWCA

I’ve seen the proposed site plan. 653 acres for 1.5 million tons of tailings, water on both sides of the site, shallow water table.

Proposed Twin Metals Mine in MN near the BWCA

I mapped tailings from coal strip mines in Indiana, Kentucky. It’s not something you can fix afterwards. Not worth the risk, especially for foreign interests with a terrible record, for a resource that is readily obtained elsewhere.

Day trip on the Little Miami River

Linda and I paddled the local little Miami National Scenic River, Fort Ancient section to just past the sewage plant below Morrow Ohio. Got to play around with a proper length paddle. Got the trim pretty good with 5 gal up front.

    HJR 140 Vote Now

Resolution passed 50-49. Last hope is Mn DNR in the permitting process. Pressure will be intense from the highest levels to fast track this in spite of science.

    HJR 140 Vote Now

I just heard that the senate is voting on the resolution to eliminate the moratorium on copper sulfide mining in the headwaters of BWCA. It’s probably too late to call your senator, but in case it’s delayed again, you can call your senator tomorrow to voice your displeasure with selling off our...

What happens when you paddle a bent shaft backwards?

Having had issues with both shoulders, I’ve done some experimenting with paddles. The longer blade is easier than the wider ones. Of my wider paddles, the bent shaft seems easier, but takes some practice in moving water and is not always ideal. I used the bent shaft on fast streams while...
