    DIY Cagoule Pattern/Design Discussion

Welcome to canoetripping.com, the canoeist's forum. I used to own a cagoule and liked it for many reasons, but gave up on it after finding that I couldn't swim very well with it on. The length, which fell below the knees, restricted my movement and could potentially turn a quick swim to shore...

Happy Birthday, Jack Kerouac (1922-69)! ✍🏻📖🛣️

They used to have a deal for locals during the slow spring season and you could stay the weekend (and dine) at an affordable price. It was kind of unreal, living the high life for a weekend. (Promotional images for Sun Mountain Lodge.)

Happy Birthday, Jack Kerouac (1922-69)! ✍🏻📖🛣️

It's happening at all the beautiful places that get "discovered" by people with plenty of money. The place changes in ways that are unintended but inevitable. Local culture and the bucolic landscape that was once so endearing gets lost in the build up, and the price of houses and land...

Happy Birthday, Jack Kerouac (1922-69)! ✍🏻📖🛣️

I spent 25 years in that wonderful valley and got to know the area quite well. The first time I encountered the rain shadow effect was when a mountaineering buddy and I (living in Walla2 at the time) decided over beers on a Friday afternoon that we were going to climb Mt. Baker that weekend. But...

    Pat Moore Andante

That was my first thought, but then, most solo canoes sold nowadays seem to be designed for fishing, with an active dog or two. The demand for sporty canoes is far more limited these days. To be fair, a lively sport canoe implies the paddler has some intent to, well, play. In calm warm water...

    Pat Moore Andante

I think M Clemens may have it right. Given CEW's comments and the 12' 6" length, maybe the better canoe to compare with the Andante is the Curtis Mayfly. Bring the Lady Bug AND the Mayfly. (Easy for me to say, I'm not the one pulling a canoe trailer.) ;)

First paddle, first outdoor swim of the season

Appreciate your confession and glad it turned out MUCH better than it could have otherwise. Chock it up to spring fever, but It's a good reminder that complacency can kill us this time of year.

    Pat Moore Andante

In some ways, compared to Pat Moore's other designs, but it looks like there are some important differences between this hull and David Yost's Lady Bug. The biggest differences I see are the much fuller bow and stern of the Andante and the lack of a "bubble" center section. Not clear how much...

Opinions on a new boat - Rapidfire, Spitfire 13, Trillium

With touring being the primary use of your new canoe, I agree with Neophyte and gumpus on recommending the Northstar Trillium. I haven't paddled a Trillium but own a Hemlock Kestrel, which is very similar in size and design to the Trillium, and think that if you pack like a backpacker the...

Tractor Seat + nylon pants = PIA

That might be the simplest solution but adding a full layer of bubble-foam padding to the seat would certainly provide some relief from the seam overlap abrasion. That and maybe tilting the seat forward a bit to shift the pressure point(s) off the back of the seat. I glued in foam padding and...

    Installed the Rack

I think I'd ask (or look) to see if they make an adapter for round bars. Then you could rotate the gunnel stops as needed to align with each other. It looks like that version of Yakima's gunnel stops might work with a round bar and if they made an adapter for the landing pads it might be the...

Posting images in threads (and Rotation Problem Solved)

Good to know. I've been resampling my images to a max size of 1000 x 1000 (or smaller) pixels before posting. Now I can just insert an image, perhaps resize using the editing frame, and it's done!

That's what I'd assumed and according to you and Glenn, it also works with web images. Excellent!

Photos of Portage / Canoe Carry Signs

The Wilderness Act is well-intended but misguided, selectively biased to accommodate hikers/paddlers with an idealized "wilderness" aesthetic. It's too rigid in its one-size-fits-all approach to management and ignores the fact that "Man" had been living in those areas for thousands of years...

In search of mad river monarch

Keep your eyes out for a Clipper Sea-1 canoe as well. It's a little longer (17' 9" vs 17' 3") and a little narrower (28" max width), but is essentially the same boat. The Mad River catalog lists the Monarch gunnel width as 28" so max width might be 30".

Thanks for that suggestion. I've been resampling (downsizing) images to better match screen displays but your suggestion is easier and faster.
