Found snowshoe bindings but not available in the US

I put a pair of these bindings on my snowshoes this winter and am very happy with the quality. From Vermont leather worker... Dan https://www.etsy.com/listing/120168062/bindings-only-pair-howe-leather-snowshoe

Stay Out of the Woods in June!

We lived in a little place in the middle of a Central NY woodlot for a numbrr of years. Deer ticks were a big problem for me as well as my dogs resulting in numerous embedded ticks both on my carcass as well as the canines. My usual method of tick removal was forceps or fingers and oftentimes...

    What are you reading?

I had been anxiously awaiting a copy of "The Gales of November" from our local library and it became available to me on Monday; the 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. John U. Bacon is a great storyteller and I'm really hooked on the book. There is a recent podcast on...

    90 miler by satellite

Hey, now that is pretty cool! Nice view of canoes headed up the lake and remembering that a paddler still feels relatively fresh at that point. A few boats are within talking distance and relatively few are drafting up. But beware young grasshoppers, Brown's Tract is just ahead;) Thanks for...

Lows Lake/ Hitchens Pond, Late October 2025

I really enjoyed reading your report. I haven't paddled that area since the mid-early 90's; prior to the big blow down. My son and I portaged into Big Deer Pond and over the divide down and out the Oswegatchie. The big white pines on that route were incredible but sadly, I heard that they didn't...

What next? Need recommendations for a solo-able tandem canoe.

My Rheaume Muskoka with its kneeling thwart is a joy to paddle solo. It has an asymmetrical hull and I only partially heel it when paddling solo but it moves quite well on flatwater whether calm or choppy. Am thinking that a Swift Keewaydin may be similar but am very happy with my Rheaume.

The Most Expensive Canoes and Paddles in the World

Yikes, and here I am gagging about current prices of Canadian built canoes post tariffs.

    Rheaume Muskoka?

Hi folks, just wondering if anyone has any experience with a Rheaume Muskoka? I have one on layaway at Oak Orchard Canoe and hope to pick it up soon. Paddled one on the little test pond with my spouse of 52 years and we both were quite taken with it. It is an asymmetrical 16 footer and seems...

    Badger Finally!

I have one in cherry. They use and recommend hemp seed oil and oil the paddle a couple of times per season depending upon usage. Although, I should admit that I used captain's (spar) varnish and did the blade. Looks great and I feel more comfortable. Have been refurbishing several old paddles...

    What are you reading?

I just finished up Adam Shoalts most recent book "Where the Falcon Flies" and really enjoyed it. He is an explorer in residence at the Royal Canadian Geographical Society who spies a peregrine falcon near his home on the north shore of Lake Erie and decides to do an epic 3400 km journey North to...

    The Maine Guide Paddle

Have you tried a Racine from S&T? I have a 63" in cherry and it it is a great lake paddle. I think my other beavertails from S&T including the 6 footer are what they now label their Penobscot model based upon the dimensions. I' do my best to get the Northwoods commemorative off the wall, on the...

    The Maine Guide Paddle

Hi, the commemorative paddle gifted to me is a Shaw and Tenney Northwoods. After Sam and crew took over manufacturing the design from Alexandra Conover Bennett, they number each Northwoods paddle they make. This is #181 and 66" long. I have a couple of 1950's S&T beavertail paddles I am...

    The Maine Guide Paddle

I may have missed this in the threads but there is a video somewhere online when Sam Martenelli from Shaw and Tenney mentioned that he constantly reminds himself to leave more wood (thickness) near the bottom of the blade on the North Woods paddle design as inherited from Alexandra. It is very...

    The Maine Guide Paddle

Great discussion! My son and grandsons gifted me an S&T Guide paddle two Christmas' back to commemorate our October trip down the Allagash. It is too much paddle for me at 68" in ash and is too special to beat up.

Doing non-racing things with a racing boat?

My spouse of 53 years has been wanting me to get rid of an 18 1/2 foot Wenonah Jensen v1-a mixer that I picked up some years ago. This is the set up with sliding seats and a "whale's tail" in the stern to move the typically lighter paddling partner farther back to balance. It is one, fast boat...

    2025 Canadian Wildfires

Am curious as to the percent of boreal forest fires that may be burning in the understory or underground on organic matter such as peat? The smoke effects are certainly widespread this year.
