    Happens every year

I just heard on the local news that the word "woodchuck" is a corruption of an early Algonquian word, wuchak or wejack, which generally means "digger"

    plain hamburger

Believe it or not, Spam is so popular that the Walmart in midtown Anchorage has it locked up. I've never noticed that, but when I freeze steak to take on a trip I wrap it in plastic wrap to prevent freezer burn. I then wrap that in aluminum foil when I pack it for a trip. When I reheat at camp...

Not for the first time, I've outsmarted myself.

Hi Tom, any chance you are the Tom Hudson that just paddled across Canada? I just noticed you’re from Pa, so I guess that wasn’t you.

    Happens every year

I’m ok with six more weeks of winter. To answer your question. Stewed groundhog tasted like a beef chuck pot roast to me. Maybe that’s why they’re called woodchuck. It’s way better than raccoon, that’s for sure.

    plain hamburger

I'm sure it's not just you Erica, I may have felt that way at one time too. For the last several years when I make burgers I usually make extras to have some leftover. They reheat fine if they aren't dried out in the first place. I've been cooking mine on a grill pan or regular frying pan as...

    plain hamburger

Great job on the burgers, they look great. I like that reversible griddle. I'm in the market for one and the reversible looks like the way to go. I've never thought about making burgers on a trip, but I don't see why not. I see three ways I would do it. 1) Bring fresh burger in a kryovak 1 lb...

Poll: Glenn's 'last' canoe or at least in spring 26

I'm pretty sure he's getting a 20' EM White Guide so he can paddle it solo from the stern seat.

Wooden Boat Guy transitioning to ? (need advice)

I really like my composite Seliga Tripper at 40 lbs. It's a great hull that I love to paddle, I think Joe hit the nail on the head with this one. Although I'd rather paddle one of my w/c boats I love this boat and don't feel the compromise too much. I agree that the light composite boats don't...

Late Jan. 2026: Snow where you are?

My snow in the Poconos where I'm at was too wind driven to measure. Some areas held no snow and some had three feet or more. I shoveled Sunday during the storm and removed what I guess was about 15 inches, which was confirmed when I took a ski in the woods. It kept snowing and the wind...

    The Canteen

Your water bottle needs to fit your kit. This canteen won't work for everyone, and I don't think it would have worked for me without the rest of my traditional gear. It easily fits in my #4 Duluth packs. It's the last thing that goes in the pack and I can pull it out without unbuckling the...

    Food handling while tripping

Yeah, proper handling of commercially caught fish requires a lot of ice, even when under refrigeration. Every possible step is taken to keep the fish in good condition, and the industry has gotten a lot better over the years. Up until about 50 years ago in the Ak gill net sockeye fishery they...

    Food handling while tripping

Fish are actually easier to fillet the next day, as the meat firms up. I'm mostly a catch and release guy too, but I would like to eat more perch and bluegills.

    The Canteen

With up to 25 inches of snow expected today I just topped off my canteen to add to the other bottled water on hand in case the power goes out. Hey Fred, did you have the gallon size?

    Food handling while tripping

I should add that the two times I ended up in the hospital it was parasites, not bacteria. To prevent this don't eat raw fish without freezing it first and if you like your fish on the rare side don't eat the belly meat. If this happened to me on a trip I could have died.

    Food handling while tripping

Fish, or food in general, lasts longer than you would expect, but I think it would last longer without water in with it. A gutted fish will last longer than fillets, and the wet towel method that Erica mentioned would be ideal. Personally I'm not as concerned as most people about leaving food...

    Food handling while tripping

I may be overly cautious, but bacteria growth is a function of time and temperature. I like the idea of storing the fillets in the bottle, it's adding water that increases the chance of adding bacteria. With or without adding the water you will probably be OK since you won't be holding the fish...

    The Canteen

Those OR insulated bottle holders work great. I rarely use them for their intended purpose anymore. I put my lunch or snacks in them usually with a can of soda or some kind of drink. They are also big enough to hold two bottles of beer.
