Symmetrical vs asymmetrical probably should be taken into account as well. J. Winter's designs gather width as they progress toward the stern. I always use Cruiser's method for determining carrying thwart placement, and on the Osprey and Raven, the leading edge of the seat was usually a couple...

    Alan's Bloodvein II

The chalk line can be somewhat problematic with a lot of rocker, but if handled properly, it usually works. First, remove all the staples along the path of the chalk line so that there is nowhere for the string to get caught. Also, I usually knock down any high ridges or spots that might catch...

Interesting centre line idea, I usually use a chalk line.

    Wabakimi is the Plan

I would feel too guilty to charge large amounts of money for shuttles. That's why I decline on a regular basis. At one time, when I had lots of free time and wasn't as misanthropic as I am now, I used to shuttle folks for free, just to meet fellow canoeists. Times have changed, lol

    Seat location Bell Wildfire solo

I think you should try it out first. I've always found 3 inches way to close to centre for me. Those series of holes would make it fairly easy to install some kind of sliding seat. I have used six inches from center up to a foot, my comfort level usually sits at ten inches from centre.

Went with the Salus Ungava. Found a place on line, no taxes, free shipping. Ordered the large for my wife, the 2xl for me. Colour said yellow, but it's more of a gold, quite nice. My initial impression was I found it odd and strange. It sits up high and I found the front kind of bulky. My wife...

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

The big Marshall Loop will provide you with an ample amount of suffering, as well as a healthy mix of fast water/white water/river travel/big lake travel/disappeared ports, etc. The main advantage being that it is a loop trip, so no trains/planes, just automobiles. The area from Stewart Lake...

    Wabakimi is the Plan

Good luck with that. I've turned down multiple shuttle requests because in order to make it profitable, I would have to charge very high fees. Gas in G Town is currently 1.90 a litre. In this area, the average shuttle is going to involve at least 4 hours driving time, 8 if you have to go twice...

Coating the interior: Epoxy or Varnish?

I always put 3 coats of varnish on the interior of new strippers. It won't fill the weave totally, but it will smooth it out a little.

John Winters Quetico, 18'5" has anyone built it?

I have built this canoe three times, and as part of my canoe building class, I started setting up the forms yesterday. However, at the end, I realized I had lost form #17. Has anyone else built this canoe, and if so, do you still have the plans? Even a picture of 17 in relation to 16 would be...

    Alan's Bloodvein II

I think I've built six or seven solo's with the hard chine, and I never once did it that way. I've done it a few ways, but one of the most effective was to just start the first strip right at the chine, so that the strip above it would still fit in the bead and cove. Then I planked down to the...

    Strength training for canoeing

I split quite a bit of wood two days ago, and it certainly did not help my shoulders. Think I will have to avoid that for a while as well. However, they powers that be are cutting a fire break around the town at the moment, rumour has it that the wood is free for the taking, piled in 16 foot...

One of the issues with living in the Boonies is that most things can not be tried before ordering. There is one canoe store a three hour drive away, and the stock they have on hand is very limited. For those of you that have experience with the MEC Fulcrum, have you noticed any quality issues...

    Strength training for canoeing

I have been pretty dedicated to strength training for a long time. For the last seven years, I have rarely missed a workout. However, in November of this year, old injuries in my shoulders flared up. I haven't had problems with them in almost 20 years. I have continued with some leg work, but...

I spent a lot of time looking for the Astral Sturgeon, really liked the looks of it, and the reviews were good. Alas, my searches in Canada only came up with XS, which might fit on my thigh.

    Life jacket suggestions

Thanks for the feedback! I was seriously looking at the one Kevin was wearing, but there is a feeling that it is not very durable. Plus, I've got short arms, I think those big pockets in the front would probably become fairly annoying for me during a day of paddling. Gadabyte's suggestion of...

    Life jacket suggestions

After watching Kevin Wild's video, I started thinking about finally getting a decent PFD. For my entire career, I've used cheap life jackets, and quite frequently didn't even wear them. Kevin's looked interesting, looked like it had storage in the front. What are some top line paddling PFD's...

Pumping air under ice to prevent fish kill

Never heard of it, certainly doesn't happen around here, and the ice is 3 feet thick for most of the winter.

New Swift Prospector 15 Solo - Specs?

I started out in the Osprey, which many people here are familiar with in one incarnation or the other. I ended up carrying chainsaws, gas, large food barrels, plus my own considerable bulk. Once overloaded, The Osprey became a dog in fast water, quite hard to turn. I think it would be pretty...
