Most Useful/Best Clamps for building a stripper?

Mine Too ! No faster way, and they keep the strips true to the forms better than clamping. The waiting for the glue to dry, with clamping systems, is too time consuming, for little benefit. All the mold builders use staples, when they make plugs, for production molds. Jim

Most Useful/Best Clamps for building a stripper?

Yes. The spring clamps I buy are described as 2" size. Oh Yes ! The Other Jim Dodd, came up with a very slick method using bungee cord and two simply cut wood blocks. When Jim and I first found each other ? We had a blast discussing our building methods The Other Jim, does superb work ! I'm...

I found the Bit Nick Schade, uses for bead and coving 3/16 thick strips. This bit is a 3/32" multi coving bit, available from Magnate. Look for #6045 Magnate The beading bit is in my previous post. I hope this isn't too confusing ! The coving bit was harder to find. Jim

Most Useful/Best Clamps for building a stripper?

Those Jimmy clamps are so handy ! Another clamping system, is the "Dragon Teeth". They are used to hold the outwhales to the deck area, without fasteners. Used exclusively when you glue outwhales on. A pic, I hope that gives you enough information, so you can see how they work. Dragon's...

I would go with the 1/4" , unless you can plane them to 3/16," and get the proper bits. I used 1/4" bits, on 3/16" strips for my last two hulls. They worked fine. Yes, the edges were a little ragged, but when I was done sanding the hull ? They were fine. So looking for bits, I found Nick...

Bench vs. Bucket Seats: Which Is Better On A Canoe?

I've never seen the Swift seats, until after I built mine, (picture only). What gave me the idea, was, I made a bench, at the wood Shop, using the first half moon cut, from a Ash log. After I built the bench and sat on the curved top ? I was pleased, at how comfortable it was. I made two half...

Bench vs. Bucket Seats: Which Is Better On A Canoe?

For some, buckets are fine. To me ? They restrict rotating your body, if say you want to turn and look behind you. They do keep you centered in the canoe. Great for stability reasons. I came up with a seat design, I'm really happy with. The side to side rails, dip down in the middle, keeping...

    Photo of the day

Yes, all food was in Bear Vaults. He walked right by them, about 10 yds away, never disturbed them at all. Must have swam to the campsite, as Beaver were going crazy, slapping their tails ! that was my first clue something was around. Jim

Great score on the strips. Oh, if you lived close to me ? I've got some good deals on canoe stuff ! As for the Runs ? Yeah, we've all been down the road to dealing with runs. Timing ! Get them, while the epoxy is still soft. A Carbide paint scraper is your best friend ! Hoping you added...

That is common for the hull, to pull away from the forms at the shearline. I staple it back in place, just very near the edge. I glass over it. Later I pull the staple through the glass. One could use hot melt glue also. Jim

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

I confess I haven't followed this thread. But Fear is a necessary evil. It keeps our senses sharp. So embrace fear as it keeps us alive. Sorry, if it sounded a little like a Chinese proverb ! Jim

I started with System Three. Agree it is a good epoxy. At the time, it was very reasonably priced. They sold out, and the price went way up. I used their Clear Coat epoxy. It was thin, and required two extra fill coats. A great wetout epoxy though. Not the best for fill coats. After contacting...

I'm refering to fill coats. Wetting out the cloth is not a problem. It's the fill coats I'm referring to. Sorry for my lack of description. Jim

Any runs waiting that long between fill coats ? Applying while the previous coat is still tacky, greatly reduces runs. Jim
