New Esquif Solo for 2026, Echo 2.0

It looks to me like it would be an improvement on the royalex Mad River Guide. IIRC, that weighed about 54 lbs.

What's changed for better or worse over your canoeing lifetime?

I haven't been avidly paddling canoes as long as most of you. But what's changed for me personally is the availability of good used canoes - especially solo canoes. When I first decided to buy a canoe but didn't have the cash to buy new, it was hard to find anything in my area better than a...

Late Season Canoe Poling on the Union River

Thanks for the link, Steve. No other polers in my area either. I've tried to recruit some, but can't seem to get any interest.

    Back in the Coho..... Finally.

Thanks. My recovery has gone really well. And the close call gives me excuse to spend more time outside.

    Obsolete Stuff

Triangles, French curves, circle stencils of various sizes, various sizes of compasses, dividers, angle gauges.....all still being used in my shop.

Thoughts on Northstar Polaris or Northstar Boreas?

Based on my experience with the Explorer and the Penobscot, I would guess that the Polaris would be at least as good as the Penobscot but it will handle noticeably different. The Penobscot is more efficient upstream than the Explorer, but not as maneuverable. I don't know but would expect the...

I never got over about eight words a minute sending, but I could read a little faster. Amazing how far we've gone in one generation.

Good point. I have to admit, I have gone back to white gas lantern and stove for car camping. The lantern, because it's quieter than propane. The stove, because the lantern. ;)

Great Lakes ice coverage - Winter 2026

Lakes freezing over are one thing. When I see the Snake River freezing over, I know winter is really here. No winter for us this year.

How about this. Not an object, but a skill - or more accurately, a language. At the beginning of the train service stage of my career, we were still transitioning into radio communication. Much of our communication between the locomotive engineer and the ground crew was still with hand signs and...

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Funny. Yosemite is where I was introduced to XC skis, back in '74. That place was magical. Great memories!

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

The quote you posted wasn't mine, but had my name on it. Weird. Just barely adjacent enough for me to wonder, "did I write that"?

I took three years of architectural drawing in highschool. Just enough to realize it was not where I wanted to go in life (although it would likely have been more lucrative). Still have my folding drawing table and all the other primitive tools. I drag it all out occasionally to put a project...

Not really. If you restrict most units to their base function - displaying lat/lon while using a paper map - batteries last a very long time. Lighted screen, active mapping, track logging, etc - those are battery hogs. But you can always carry a solar charger. ;) My concern with GPS units is...

The GPS is nice, but the compass is still mandatory, as far as I'm concerned.

Most people would probably say so. I haven't used either for years - except to see if I still could. Dry chemical hand warmers are so much more convenient, safer, and they don't stink. I hear ya. But my saw fence has its own very accurate scale. :)

Thoughts on Northstar Polaris or Northstar Boreas?

Probably not. Mine is right at 50 lbs. Even the aluminum railed version is only a few pounds lighter, IIRC. I can still lift it by myself but prefer not to. Since my wife isn't interested in overnight canoe trips, it's still near perfect for the day trips we do. At our size though, it would...

    Thoughts on the Dragonfly 15

That's really helpful information. Another aside - I installed thigh straps in my MR Guide, mostly to keep me from sliding forward in the rough. I soon learned that lifting a knee with the strap works so much better than weighting the other knee, so I installed the same in my Wildfire. Oh...

I found my old slide rule recently while digging through storage. Might have to relearn how to use it just for fun. Dad's engineering scale, still in its sleeve... I'll see your scale and raise you a 6' ruler. How about this stinky thing?
