    Airtravel with PakCanoe

I wasn't directly involved in the shipping but my group found it cheaper to mail it. Of course you need someone like an outfitter to receive it. And if it's going to a Canadian destination, it's best to drive over the border, go through customs personally, then ship it.

Carry Brook to the Aroostook River, Northern Maine

Me and Doug Doremus had great plans to ascend La Pomkeag and Carry Brook to Grand Lake Sebois once upon a very long time ago. It was mid June and the Aroostook was already drying up. Met an old-timer on the river and he laughed so hard he nearly split in two. "You'll be dragging your boats...

    The Millinocket Carry, Northern Maine

So many comments I want to respond to. Thanks, Goonstroke for this thread. Fannie May Eckstorm describes the "Dobsy Carry" along Rand Brook, leaving it where it bends sharply north (actually it describes the carry starting directly from Passadumkeag, so it's probably a seasonal thing there)...

    Paddle transport cart

After many experiments, I remove my painters, tie to the grab handles at each end of the boat and tie with a trucker's hitch to the four corners of the cart. Five or six miles fully loaded on a logging road like this and very little shifting.

    Solo - fears and boredom

My wife has a rule against my paddling solo, but once in a while I get an exception. I love it! So much more time for my journaling and photography (lame as it is). I also know that "can't find anyone to go" syndrome and that's tough. If that's the problem, join some groups. Canadian Canoe...

    Paddle transport cart

Yup, I bought a Canadian Boat Walker about 25 years ago and have put many miles on it. The design is tried and true, basically the same as the Suspenz. I have flirted with other designs mostly because 16 pounds is a ridiculous amount of weight for a single purpose gizmo. Still searching...

Video: 13,000 Years of Native Penobscot River Canoeing

Great video. I've always been impressed with the stewardship the Penobscot Nation shows for their river.

Vehicle vandalism while in the wilderness

Common sense precautions is all. So far I've lost a pair of binoculars, a carabiner, and saved a million hours of worry.

    Strap Yoke Variation

I tried and rejected the strap yoke. The combination of vinyl gunwales and royalex hull allowed too much inward flex to keep the strap taught. For the time being I'll just stow both paddles under the stern float bag which shifts the balance point to the leading edge of the solo seat.

    Strap Yoke Variation

    A. Yes, always remove the button from your cap. Especially if you're bald and don't like walking around with a giant scab on your head. B. A marlinspike is handy for loosening knots. It would make short work of loosing the d-ring buckle. I have a handy little pocket knife sized multitool with...

Things that interfere with or otherwise screw up canoe trips

Not quite a canoe trip but I was all packed for a 21 day private trip down the Grand Canyon, manning the oars on one of the rafts. The plan was to take the train with all my gear to work in Boston, then zip over to Logan Airport and be gone for a month. It was that morning that the Governor...

What was the worst canoe you ever owned or paddled?

I rented a canoe in France to run the Class 2 River Tarn. It was rotomolded in the fashion of a sit-on-top, the topside having butt buckets for the stern and bow paddlers complete with foot cups, there were bulkheads instead of thwarts, forming a center compartment that was set up for two...

    Pack Weight Ratios

I've gone to kevlar boats, so with two poles, lines, and the bailer swinging side to side like a metronome I'd say that's about 70 pounds. On my back goes a 115 liter propack, with paddles lashed to the back and a duffle on top. I'm guessing maybe 60 pounds? Then I pick up my 16 pound portage...

Paddling places that weren't what you expected

Probably just my own experience, but the Saint John in Maine was terrible. After paying for day use fees and camping fees on top of that, then for the shuttle in it was a pretty expensive trip. For that I expected some sort of wilderness experience. But somehow, even though the side roads...

    What went wrong?

Beautiful day, 72 degrees. 8 pumps of resin, hardener ran out after 4 or 5 pumps. Got out a new jug and finished the job, though now not exactly sure of the mix ratio. 10 minutes into the job it gets real hot in my hand and actually starts smoking. You can see the result. So was it a bad mix or...

    Aging Adjustments

Best way to feel old instantly is to start tripping with folks 20 years your junior. I turned 65, seem to always still be recovering from the last injury when the next one arrives. That said, still portaging miles and miles, poling upstream for days, grunting, sweating and cursing. My biggest...

    Missed it by that much..

A local outfitter has apparently had a pretty shiny MR Outrage for sale for $500 for over a year. I inquired yesterday and it just sold. Certainly solves having to explain to my wife why I need a seventh canoe.

Adjustable front seat in a tandem

I installed a Wenonah sliding bow seat in a Bell Mystic so that my paddle partner, weighing 50 pounds more than me, could paddle bow. We blew it to bits twice. I think it was designed to move a petite person forward, not a big slab of paddling muscle backward.

Hanging or storing a canoe off floor in a garage with vehicles

I have two of those commercial hoists but the lowering mode is activated by pulling almost straight down on the cord, and the canoe is right there in the way. Is there a solution I don't know about?

    North Water lacing d rings

I think the right angle drill is the best solution for this. I'm sure he'll be happy for the excuse to buy another tool! Thanks
