    Installed the Rack

Pretty nice day here yesterday also. Put a third bar across my Tacoma and cap. Lots of nice support now. Just need a new solo boat to attach to them now.

Don't Get Me Wrong - I Love Winter, But...

Winter woods are wonderful. Quiet time with a thermos full of soup or tea. Cowboy coffee brewed over a folding lightweight backpacking wood stove on a cheapie soot stained Stanley pot set. Nothing but me and the sound of snowflakes delicately crashing down through the bare skeletons of the...

What's changed for better or worse over your canoeing lifetime?

Clothing, materials and weight. Everything is dryer, including ourselves. Everything is lighter and sleep systems are more comortable.

Great Lakes ice coverage - Winter 2026

Northern Lake Michigan has some ice piled up by the shore, but not as much as usual. Probably only about 20yds or so and only maybe 4-5 high.

OK...How about the Wenonah Wilderness solo?

Yeah.....sometimes I really miss my old Zephyr. Not the best wilderness tripper, as far as capacity, but I made it work.

OK...How about the Wenonah Wilderness solo?

Been looking for a solo under 16ft. I kind of like this boat for the stability to fish out of and yet keep a little speed/efficiency over the Basswood Solo. Both look good. Specs have me thinking the shallow arch is more defined in the Wilderness. I like my milage days, but also will lay up for...

Do Canoes Distract from Drug Side Effects?

For years, feminine hygiene problems and products cornered the market on tennis in commercials. I don't really care what affliction we got.....at least it's something. At this point, I'd take hangnails and anal warts. Embrace it. 🤣

    Winter projects

I don't have much of any winter project/s going on this year. I usually do. Sometimes it's customizing .22 rifles (did enough of that), sometimes cruising thrift stores for good quality but abused chef knives to refinish/fix to give away to aspiring chefs and home chefs who could use quality...

    Burning plastic

I'm that guy that tries to repackage, or do whatever I can to make it easier to keep smells down. I have always been a "pack it in, pack it out" type. I just have to reconfigure some ingredients to do so. It just requires more planning.

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

I have a business I have been trying to cut down my time in. It's one of those things you get trapped in. I've been trying to get out for about 5 years. my kid has been running it and crushing it. Our problem is finding help. So I stay on. Hopefully that will change because I started talking...

    Mutating Ticks

I hate ticks. Permethrin works well. Just be careful how you apply it around your skin. Read those lables well.

    Mutating Ticks

As an owner of a pest control company, in the same general region as you, I can say without a doubt that these past warm winters have not done much for keeping insects of all kinds (including the many invasives we are now dealing with) in check. Last year, we had to treat 2 exteriors in Feb...

    What's your best dehydrated meal?

Interesting thread. I have , I believe two recipes in the now older Freezer Bag Cooking Cookbook. However, there is one recipe that came out of the Titanium Chef competitions in the early 2000's from the days of the Backpacking forums that got taken over by politics and forever ruined, that tops...

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

Buy myself a new solo boat. Sell my old one. Paddle the Current River in MO. Hit up some local big flowages (we have lots of free paddle in sites here in WI) for some smaller 2-3 day trips and hopefully expand my pretty much non-existent circle of people who enjoy some paddling, fireside...

    Humorous outdoor situations or events

I was talking to my neighbors kid (now 40) a few days ago and we got on doing trips when he asked me if I and the wife have anything fun coming up as far as out outdoor travel pursuits. My wife has known this guy since he has been about 3 or 4. Nice guy, nice family. Lives 5 hours away and...

    Solitude isn't for everyone

What I have learned over a very long time doing outdoor stuff. What people like us do, is rare in the sense of the general public. When talking about your trips in casual company, you notice things. Everyone loves the "idea" of doing it. And even a lot of people say that as kids, they and their...

How much have you paddled this year?

Not as much as I wanted. But I am retiring this year after spending way too much time setting up my business to run without me. I realized that if I didn't have an exit date, family would just keep me working. This year should be a whole lot more.

    Footbraces

I put a set in my little OT Pack. Kayak adjustables. It took a cute little pond hopper and made it into a much nicer and capable canoe.

    Anyone Use This Type Shelter?

A neat tent/shelter like that was the old MSR Missing Link. Half tent, half shelter. More weather coverage and bug protection, but enough openness screening for catching some fresh air.

    What got you into canoeing?

I don't really know. I guess the saying, "It's in your blood" really applies to me. my Great-Grandfather was a very rich guy (before he went broke and died alone in a trailer in Fl) with some big connections and would go on adventures and safaris all over the world. My Grandparents were huge...
