    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

I just got my Trillium switched from pack to seated drops and picked a few canoe paddles. I'm looking forward to spending this year working on my paddle strokes. ABT I'm with you on the fast boat thing, I paddles a Magic and loved it, and I'd like to try a GRB Classic and Advantage. I'm not...

So, what did you buy on Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

By the time black friday rolled around I had already bought all the canoe gear I wanted, so I didn’t get anything there. Got a few pairs of jeans and a new fridge for a good price though. I did start my new canoe fund. My father in law was quite generous for Christmas, as he always is. After we...

    Maps... I like maps.

I don’t have fun old maps, but I do collect maps of everywhere I hike or paddle. When I’m planning a trip I get a map months ahead of time to figure out what I want to do. I’ll pull them out occasionally to reminisce over past hikes and paddles.

    Potentially promising canoe boots

Erica it depends what I’m doing. If I’m wearing boots/shoes for work I prefer more neutral colors. But for outdoor activities I find more obnoxious colors amusing. I’m not sure when that changed, there was a time I would have cared. My first response to your new boots was “Those are amazing,”...

    What got you into canoeing?

Pack you are certainly making me feel better about starting canoeing at 44. I'm looking forward to 40+ more years of paddling.

    What got you into canoeing?

My wife kept pestering me to get kayaks, which I did after we got a vehicle that could actually carry them. They were fine kayaks but rather boring to paddle, so we quickly outgrew them. I got my wife a nice kayak, and then discovered the world of solo canoes. I picked up a Northstar Trillium...

    Potentially promising canoe boots

You should definitely report back. I don't mind the nylon over the ankle, so I'm looking at the Tactical Mids if my Altra Timp GTX don't hold up to the (admittedly lame) winters here in SE PA. Unfortunately for my bank account I don't find regular fit shoes/boots comfortable anymore, so options...

    Winter projects

I'm planning on getting the dog out for a lot of day hikes. The winters in the greater Philadelphia area are pretty mild and we don't get a lot of snow, so that's a little depressing. But getting out and moving definitely keeps me happier and healthier, and any time away from the suburban sprawl...

    Kite build, 2025-2026 Nova Scotia

It doesn't look like Ms. Bindi is in the mood for negotiation. Looking forward to seeing your build if you get a chance to share your progress. I'm not talented enough to build a canoe but I enjoy looking over these build reports, it's a fascinating process.

    Wife’s New Car

Yea that's significantly more spread then I have on my CR-V, I could see why the CR-V would cause you some concern. We got ours before we even got kayaks/canoes, and I've just had to make it work. While I'm not trying to sell you on it, I can say I've confidently carried a 17' wood kayak at...

    Wife’s New Car

Here's some pics of my setup with the CRV. Not the best picture but should get the point across. The canoe sits above the driver, the kayak goes on the J-rack on the other side. The inside measure between the rails is about 24", outside is 29". I don't think I could fit another canoe up there...

    Wife’s New Car

Yea, what gumpus said. I'll measure the spread on my CRV and maybe get a pic of my setup when I get a chance. The distance between the rails is closer that I would prefer, but I've 5+ hours on the highway several times and had no trouble with it. I always use bow and stern lines with the canoe...

    Wife’s New Car

I have a 2017 Honda CR-V that I’m quite happy with. I have the factory roof rails and crossbars. The rails are sturdy enough but I can’t recommend the crossbars, I’ve had to get creative to make space for my canoe and the wife’s kayak at the same time. But the usual suspects (Thule, ect) make...

    Potentially promising canoe boots

I have a few pairs of Lems boots that I use for daily wear in colder seasons. They stand up pretty well to the snow and slop of suburban winters, and they do surprisingly well on ice. However, if you’re not familiar with Lems I would recommend looking into their design, you’ll be getting stuff...

Thoughts on Grasse River/GRB Newman Classic?

Yea it's getting pretty chilly down here as well, I'm sad for you that you got such a nice boat at the tail end of the season. I actually got to meet Max (It looks like he's taken over production of GRE) after the ADK 90 this year, and we spent about 15 minutes looking over the GRE Classic he...

Some recent thoughts on solo canoe vs. touring kayak.

Ha, I know what you mean Grumpus that psychological hurdle is daunting. When I read your post I was imaging hitting my Trillium with a hammer and saying "Yep, it'll stand up to anything." But there's not a chance I'll ever do that. I've been very happy with the Trillium. I really should have...

How much have you paddled this year?

Patrick that looks like quite the project, good luck and I hope you're able to get out more next year. My wife and I can only get out on the weekends, just because of work schedule and the time it takes to get to water. We paddle a little less this year because she was doing stuff with...

Some recent thoughts on solo canoe vs. touring kayak.

I have a Northstar Trillium in BlackLite. I've been impressed with how well it keeps the water out in rough conditions and light rapids. (Class 1+? I'm not good at rating this sort of thing but the waves I was going through looked big.) The only time I got water in the Trillium was when I messed...

Thoughts on Grasse River/GRB Newman Classic?

Thanks for sharing all of this. My two year plan involves getting another canoe specifically for lakes, and the GRB Classic is definitely on the short list. I would not be sad if you shared a few more of these when you can get back out on the water.

    Greetings From SE Pennsylvania

Did a group paddle once, I would agree that it was too many people for my taste. But it was nice to be with a group who knew the Delaware for my first trip on it. Al, I'll certainly check out your write ups. Bradys Lake and Francis Walter are on my list as well. I'll certainly hit you up in...
