Poll: Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

Don't worry @jdeerfoot, if you ever make it to the northeast and come on a trip with us we won't expect you to always do the dishes. Everyone gets their turn. No doubt about it, group meals can be a lot of work, but there are lots of ways for people to do their part. First there is the cost -...

Poll: Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

I hadn't looked at this for a while - 44% at least OK with group meals, 56% would rather do their own. Off next week to the Allagash - 4 guys in tandems, two big coolers, three cooks and one guy who doesn't mind washing dishes - the perfect group. We'll do breakfast and dinner as a group...

First swim of the year – Lower Poplar on the Dead (ME)

Carp would be pushing upsteam. ;)

    Rx Bell Yellowstone in NH

5' 10", 240 lbs - I'm big for it, but its a lot of fun to paddle. No oil canning. Looks like it is gone.

When a hole smiles at you

It is hard to know now because it is all underwater now, but based on the way the dams are spread out the rapids would have been spread out too. Probably not a pool and drop, more likely longer rapids interspersed with flatwater/quickwater. The river would have been really flashy. There is one...

    Rx Bell Yellowstone in NH

I love my Yellowstone Solo. I paid $800 for it new in 2005. I'm in the same place or I might buy it,

    Poling the Farmington River, CT?

Yup - the Riverton section of the Farmington is a great for poling, but I haven’t been there in quite a while. We would do downstream runs from the Goodwin Dam off Hogback Road to the parking lot at the Satan’s Kingdom State Recreation Area – about 10 miles. You can break it up into smaller...

    Millbrook Outrage

Yup - the trouble is keeping my paddle downstream on the left means turning away from the camera. I thought I would try turning into the camera, but I should have switched my paddle to the right first. I was lucky to get this picture considering how quickly I dumped.

First swim of the year – Lower Poplar on the Dead (ME)

I wonder if you could do a downstream poling run at 1200 cfs. - you would probably need to kneel for the bigger rapids. Maybe one of the polers will chime in. Its ME so someone must have tried it. I have friends who poled up Spencer Stream as part of the NFCT.

Roll Call for West CT, SW MA and MHV NY Canoeists

As long as you don't go too far into NY, I'd definitely be interested. The flatwater sections of the Housatonic are nice - Sheffield, MA to Ashley Falls, MA, or Ashley Falls, MA to Falls Village, CT.

    Anybody outfitted an Esquif Echo?

I have knee pads and can put thigh straps and bags in my Yellowstone Solo. Fun to play in, but it is definitely a submarine. https://www.flickr.com/photos/eckilson/albums/72157649221093884/ I wouldn't go so far as to put a pedestal - nice to be able to sit on the seat in the flatwater

    Millbrook Outrage

I'll keep a RX boat for low level runs when I don't want to scratch up the Millbrook. That will be the RX Outrage, so I guess I will have to find a new home for my old Encore. Going to be hard to give it up, even though I haven't paddled it in a coupe of years...

    Millbrook Outrage

Well, it's been a while since I have dipped my bow into that particular hole. I think this is the only picture that I have, and it was a timely shot because a nanosecond later I was swimming downstream. I have lots of pictures of this... I usually do that run with kayakers, but on...

    Millbrook Outrage

Surfs great - different than the RX version. In my RX Outrage, the bow tends to dig into the wave in front of the hole - often filling up the boat and limiting how far into the hole I will go. In the composite Outrage, the the boat is lighter and the bow rode up up the wave rather than digging...

What shipping charges for a canoe paddle have you paid recently (and what carrier)?

Just bought a new 56" Werner Bandit Carbon from NRS. They charged me an extra $20 and shipped it Fedex. Its on its way. First time I've bought a carbon paddle. The fiberglass version was out of stock. It replaces the paddle that I threw away trying to swim out of Lower Poplar.

    Open Boats at Zoar Gap

Another run through Zoar Gap last Friday - boats in order: Blackfly Condor, Millbrook 20/20, Millbrook Shacho, Millbrook Outrage.

    Millbrook Outrage

Finally got my Millbrook out in some moving water - a Fife Brook run yesterday. Here I am going through Zoar Gap. My initial thoughts compared to the royalex version - definitely faster, crisper turns, really dry. I've always admired the Millbrook guys who were bailing out their boats with...

Improve your boat control techniques to enhance all types of canoeing

A worthy goal, but probably not realistic for those of us with a life beyond paddling, which is all of us. I focus on what I need for the types of boats that I have and the types of trips that I do. I'm always looking to improve, but I don't need to be an expert at everything. Whitewater...

Single sided correction strokes - Does your paddle touch the hull?

The only paddlers I have ever seen do a bow pry are Bill and Paul Mason in their tandem videos. They would use prys to move the canoe sideways to line up on a shoot, and there were a couple of shots when Paul uses a wedge to turn into an eddy. Definitely not an American thing, except maybe for...
