Bugs in Tent: How to keep them out, kill, or tolerate them?

I am with you - I am really trying to stop buying those semi-useful things that catch my eye. In fact, now I am trying to sell off or donate things I bought and rarely or never used. I am especially proud of myself for having attended the last few Canoecopia events and having bought nothing...

Aftermarket roof rack options w/o rain gutters

I know we’re talking about racks, but Erica’s observation on Canadians and their car topping got me thinking about how they carry their canoes. I have seen more pool noodles, pipe insulation and old horse collar-type life jackets used as portage pads in Canada than in the states. I use pipe...

Ai bots threaten the digital canoeing world

I have been a member of this board for just the past 5 years but I don’t remember any vetting questions. But then I don’t necessarily remember what I did last week. So thanks to the mods for all their work and diligence in moderating this site. Interesting topic, please keep us updated.

Bugs in Tent: How to keep them out, kill, or tolerate them?

I make sport of killing invaders - however, you need to accept bug stains on the walls of tent interior. I also second the use of mosquito coils. On one trip we had to camp on the portage trail. Under the tarp on a softly raining night we played cards and the burning coil drove off the...

    Felt safe until now

I guess it was that $70-80 grand truck that determined our price as opposed to your price/truck.

    Felt safe until now

I live about 60 miles north of Chicago and when we go through it (The Loop which is downtown Chicago) on I94 we try to get through by 4-5 am to avoid the bumper-to-bumper crawl on the expressway. But at least now there are no longer snipers occasionally shooting at cars from the former high rise...

Rutabaga Paddlesports in Madison, Wisconsin, is Closing (NO - Staying Open)

I am glad Canoecopia will continue since that is where my paddling group gathers each March for a reunion. We are fortunate that one of our members has a large house near Madison which can accommodate the group. We also use the gathering to setup our trips for the coming season. The store...

    Photo of the day

Wonderful fall photos - my favorite time of the year for paddling and just living.

Aftermarket roof rack options w/o rain gutters

I agree with Gamma, you are not really driving unless you are running through the gears with a manual transmission. My last manual was an ‘02 Corolla which my wife sold to a friends kid while I was on a two week Canadian trip. She selected a new 2008 Mazda 3 automatic as a replacement. It is an...

Ai bots threaten the digital canoeing world

Thanks for the tip and all the work you mods do to keep this site functional. I will try not to get pulled in by ai posters, but I am sure ai is smarter than I am, so thanks again for looking over my shoulder.

    Eagle Eats Great Blue Heron

Amazing. Several times I have come across eagles feeding on road kill. And on trips my fishing trip mates always clean the catch away from camp leaving the cleanings on the rocks for the gulls that seem to come out of nowhere. Several times we have seen an eagle come in and scatter the gulls. It...

Callan: Adventure Is Being Planned Out Of Existence

Not on this trip. In fact, I have seen exactly one caribou in 30+ weeks of trips since 2007 and that was after ten years of trips in 2016. All we found was a lot of caribou scat, no bedding sites and no sheds.

Callan: Adventure Is Being Planned Out Of Existence

Keeled Over mentioned campsites in the Wabakimi area, which are kind of scarce due to the heavy vegetation. On this summer’s trip to the south end of Savant Lk we found them to be even more scarce. I was amazed at how few areas would even lend themselves to being a passable campsite. And we...

Callan: Adventure Is Being Planned Out Of Existence

Seconding what Marten has said. I am still surprised at the folks who are interested in Canada trips, some of which are pretty straightforward, such as the Turtle Rv east of Atikokan. One guy wanted gps tracks and the location of ports and campsites on what is not a large river where finding...

Poll: Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

Always preferred group meals since I cook almost nothing. My lifelong tradeoff has been I always do all post meal cleanup. It has worked for me living off-base in the military, while a college student, at home with the wife of 50+ years and on all of my canoe trips. Almost no one would want to...

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

Gamma, it has been interesting to me to follow your trip planning process. I guess I am getting to the age where I will have to relive past trips vicariously through young guys like you. Thanks.

My trip to Canada in a Cyber truck

I didn't want to sound like I didn't enjoy my trip. I did and it gave me a chance to travel with some long time paddling friends. But at nearly 78 yrs of age it was bit too much of a sweat fest for me. I will be avoiding the peak of the summer going forward. And in the few years I have left...
