    Everglades, bourbon-fueled post mortem lists

The parks have elevated platforms called chickees that people can camp upon. They usually include port-a-potties also. It makes camping easier in the really marshy areas and keeps you up out of reach of the gators. I searched some TRs to find a good picture but most have "photobucket"...

    What the Shell?

Woodsmoke and horses... if Chanel ever bottles that combo I might have to get married again.

    Happens every year

Those buggers get up to 35 lbs... I'd probably cook one up just to see. (and here I thought rodents of unusual size didn't really exist)

    What the Shell?

No face shield but I've been pretty happy with the Guidewear jackets from Cabela's / Bass Pro Shops. They're lightweight, waterproof, breathe reasonably well and have held up really well. They've become my go-to light jacket for windy or rainy weather on trips or around home. They also seem to...

    Happens every year

I'll agree that it's better than coon. I like to parboil young groundhogs and they taste a lot like rabbit to me. Best part is that just about any farmer will let you hunt them and doing so virtually guarantees you access during deer season.

I like the anchor pegs for chickee camping... DIY or purchase?

    Photo of the day

What on earth would cause a turkey to stalk a panther?!... Is there a turkey on YouTube doing insane survivalist challenges?

Candle Lantern: Safely use in a tent? How to clean?

LOL We lost power for about 3 hours yesterday evening. I fired up the old white gas Coleman lantern right on the coffee table. Enough light to read by and a little heat as a bonus. :)

    Wateree or Broad River, SC

Once the place warms up a little, I'm thinking about revisiting SC and doing a few nights' trip. Both the Broad River and the Wateree River have been suggested and both would make a take-out at Sparkleberry Swamp a possibility. Broad River from Ninety-nine Islands Dam looks like 150 miles or...

    Recped’s chicken

Hmm... that might explain the longevity of the seemingly unfoul fowl. I wonder if anyone will subpoena the trip report (or Recped) as evidence?

Poll: Glenn's 'last' canoe or at least in spring 26

I think he needs a stripper. (I mean, everyone likes strippers, right?)

Hogging and interior cracks in OT Discovery 169

Welcome. I don't know much about repairing hogged boats but I'd wondered the same about the cause. I have to doubt that the center thwart would have kept that part of the floor from caving in so it seems likely that the canoe had been stored upside down with some heavy weights fore & aft...

Difference between NRS and NRS Outdoor Safety?

Yep. They even cut & pasted the "about" write-up where they talk about their Moscow, Idaho headquarters. (they did, however, remove the phone number from the "contact us" section).

    What's out West?

I remember those days. My first trip (BWCA) included wrapping the center thwart in pool noodle & duct tape... didn't work badly IMO. Incidentally, I've still never used a portage yoke. I now tie the paddles in & use them instead. Out of curiosity @yixak: How long was that 1st portage?

    Greetings from Western NY.

Welcome. I'll certainly be interested in the responses to your other thread but I can't help there. I've been practicing becoming a gram weenie while building more strippers.

Late Jan. 2026: Snow where you are?

I'm not normally pessimistic but I'll make an exception: Snow is a pretty good insulator so those beasts are probably fine. I've always thought (perhaps wrongly) that extreme cold without snow cover was better to kill some of them off. Speaking of snow cover... it wasn't too bad here. We got...

    Clipper prospector 14 debate

We REALLY need an eye-roll emoji option on the "like" bar.

    Food handling while tripping

Interesting. I've seen people keep buckets of fish overnight (no water) to be cleaned in the morning but always thought it was better to knock them apart ASAP because I thought fish started to rot pretty quickly. I've always soaked fish to remove more blood from the filets (I use salt water at...

    Food handling while tripping

In order to prevent thread drift, I'll ask here if the general consensus is that I'm being reckless... I've always used Nalgene bottles for storing fish on trips. I don't want dead fish laying in my boat all day or fish carcasses in camp so my solution has always been to pull ashore, clean the...
