    Sponges

I use a big one crammed in a cut off milk jug that serves as a bailer. The jug fits snuggly under the seat of my Prism solo. Very handy for quick wipe downs.

    Belt and suspenders gear?

Sometimes two chainsaws because clearing portage s really is my thing.

    Big Water Double Take

All I ever use is a Werner Camano all carbon 260cm. Help from this forum led me to the Camano. I could not be happier as 240 was too short for me and a lot of others wanting a double blade for a canoe. Problem is Werner makes these longer paddles but stores rarely stock them so folks are sold a...

    Sixty Strokes

I just started on #68. One 3-4 week canoe trip in late summer is my goal. I gave up doing ice-out canoe trips because I have a secluded log cabin with woodstove and metal roof in Northern MN to play at in the shoulder seasons. If you are able to do it twice weekly strength workouts really ease...

    More snowshoeing

Great to hear how well you ended a hard workout! Nice to hear that snow report too.

    need help solo paddling ...

Bob, First let me say that I know how hard it must have been to even type the word "sitting" and how painful the thought of a kayak paddle must be. No LOL here. Back in 2009 we did the exploration up the "Minjim" in WCPP and I used that 18 foot Cii as a solo. Properly trimmed on gentler waters...

    Bald Eagles in Dayton, Ohio

Here in Northern Illinois I pick up road killed deer and put them out in an open field. As I watch my other feeders I can look out to that "feeder" too. Yesterday 7 Bald Eagles were bickering over the venison. One adult and 6 immatures which was a great mix to see. Back in the troubled era there...

Looking for Wilderness River for Summer 2019

The Bloodvein is on a lot of bucket lists and many are getting it crossed off with the easier egress at the end. It gets a lot of paddlers from around the world too. Not "too crowded" by any means. In 2017 we portaged back into it from the north and spent three days paddling back into Ontario...

Looking for Wilderness River for Summer 2019

The Bloodvein River from Woodland Caribou in Ontario to Lake Winnipeg fits except for the solitude. The new summer road for egress near the lake has made it too easy to set up. In that area I would start on the Gammon instead as it is a less used parallel route. Alan Gage went down and back...

    Review of Estwing Sportsman's Axe

Estwing is located near me in Rockford, IL. One of my tripping partners ran a local corrugated box company that was making all the plain boxes that Estwing shipped the well known hammers and axes in. He had his graphics department make up a prototype box with an attractive display of the company...

    WCPP or Kilarney?

Hey Bob, You should come to Quiet Journey gatherings during Canoecopia. We can each grab a beer and cry into it as we reminisce about special places that have gone up in smoke. We could study the maps for possible routes. I might have Farmer rooming with me.

    Bloodvein System

There is a new year round road to Bloodvein Village near Lake Winepeg that may not be on your maps. Nice for egress but made the river pretty busy.

    International Rescue Insurance

Emergency crews will extract you but not the canoe. With a communication device you can contact a float plane service and be picked up if the situation is not life threatening.

Helpful equipment for the solo tripper

I took a young man on a canoe trip and he was really eager to learn all he could. At the end of the week I Sent the blackened pots home with him with instructions for cleaning. Enthusiasm waned as he started scrubbing them in a basement sink. He left them and when h e went back at it several...

    The Northwoodsman

Birchy, Faunce is where I have to park if the Range Road (Faunce Road on new maps) is not plowed. One old homestead still has some dovetailed walls standing. It is the only one I have seen built that way. My friends are big on the Swedish coffee and one is downright particular about the...

Longer solo trips and resupply question.

Next year's trip is back to Atikaki in eastern Manitoba. August so the fishing is tougher but even the outpost camps are empty by then.

Wood Harvesting Tools - Saws, Axes and Knives

I am a chainsaw carrier too. It's all about cleaning the old portages as I use them. Never have campfires so no need for an ax.

Easy pass while hauling a canoe?

I know the I Pass in Illinois uses the scan but the photo as a back-up. If the vehicle is registered to the Pass some do not bother changing the unit from windshield to windshield.
