    Happy New Year to all

Yeah, I fell for it too. Anyway... happy New Year! Waiting for it to either stop raining or start snowing. Meanwhile I'm sitting by the fire.

So, what did you buy on Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

I was gonna ask if it comes with a magnifying glass. :)

Request for Insight on the Owyhee River, Oregon

Look at 1982/1983. What a winter that was! I long for another.

    Solitude isn't for everyone

It's also not always about vast wilderness. Or even wilderness by any definition. I find solitude on the local lakes and rivers, simply by taking my canoe into the places others can't or won't go - which is easy, considering the limitations of motors and even double blades. It's part of what is...

    Maps... I like maps.

I have loved maps ever since I could read. All adventure planning begins with maps. My professional career relied heavily on maps. I don't understand people who can't or won't read maps. My favorites are USGS survey maps, of which I have a huge collection - many with notations from observation...

So, what did you buy on Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

For myself? Nothing. For my son who lives in the frozen wasteland - Kahtoola Microspikes. Fantastic gear, if you have the need.

    Solitude isn't for everyone

With the right people, a small group is nice. But those people are rarely available. I'm so used to doing my adventures alone that I expect it. And frankly I prefer it most of the time because I can choose the direction and the pace without disappointing anyone.

Request for Insight on the Owyhee River, Oregon

I never have figured out how to use snotel in a meaningful way. I rely heavily on these two sites... https://www.nwrfc.noaa.gov/rfc/ https://www.usbr.gov/pn/hydromet/select.html For the Owyhees though, I mostly just look out to the southwest of me and listen to the locals ;)

    Wish me luck.

I've been wanting to go do the Bowron Circuit for over six years. Things conspired against that plan early on, as this thread marked historically. That was followed by unrelated health and family issues that took some time to resolve. While I'm not at my pre-covid level of fitness, I'm back in...

Request for Insight on the Owyhee River, Oregon

Just a little heads up.... Snowpack in the Owyhee River watershed is not looking good this winter so far.

    Which Canoe Should I Take?

A review of this thread shows me that I must have assumed the Reflection to be the 16' version. So what I said about the Penobscot being easier to lift and carry wouldn't apply to that boat.

    Winter training.

^Yes, loading and carrying - those are the things that seem to get harder quickest without training. I use some free weights and elastic bands for keeping those muscles in reasonable shape. I paddle and pole as often as I can, as long as the water doesn't get hard. Usually short trips of a...

Welcome to the forum, NoyoPacific! And thanks for confirming the nature of that Traveler III. Enjoy!

    Overcoming Fear of Whitewater

Good points. The mostly flat stretch of our local Snake River from Swan Falls dam to Walters Ferry has claimed a lot of lives. Though flat and wide, it's pushy and littered with strong eddies, boils, seams, and sucky whirlpools. Not a good place to swim. I don't fear it - maybe I should - but I...

    Travel Fishing Rod and Case?

This was a safety award at my job, back in '89. Not my best or favorite spinning kit, but it's actually pretty good although not as sensitive as my good rods. It goes with me whenever I think things might get rough, and the thing has caught a lot of fish. No idea what's currently available along...

    Travel Fishing Rod and Case?

LOL. Mom gave me one for Christmas when I was a kid. It actually went with me on some bicycle trips, and it did catch fish.... sometimes. I still have it tucked away somewhere.

    Which Canoe Should I Take?

My vote would be for the Penobscot. I haven't paddled the other two, but I had a Penobscot that I paddled solo and poled. It did fine in short class 2 drops, but that was without a tripping load. Just the same, I think it would be fine with a reasonable load paddled solo. Pretty sure it's going...

    Gumotex inflatables.

I've toyed with the idea of a drop stitched Sea Eagle canoe. My experience with inflatable SUPs makes me think it would be an acceptable performer for times when a hard shell would be problematic. I've only seen one in person one time though, and it was a very brief encounter.
