What are the best river and inland lake canoes of all time?

I think the important thing to know is that of the long established canoe makers (excluding those makers of all things plastic) that have managed to stay in business over the ups and downs of the last few decades - are there any canoes that might not be the best for somebody ? I think the answer...

What are the best river and inland lake canoes of all time?

Yeah, there's also "the best canoe I can afford". ;)

What are the best river and inland lake canoes of all time?

That's a tricky question. First, one has to define "best". Best construction, or best finish? Best for lakes or best for mild rivers? Best for big whitewater? Best for durability or best for light weight? Of all of the above, best tandem or best solo? I know I can't even answer the question...

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Yes to all of that (except I haven't tried the Vectors, but believe you). The BC125 are more rigid and stabil than the Koms, but not quite as much as the V6. Koms are great for breaking trail in soft stuff. When things get hard and I want to put on some miles, I gravitate to my Karhu 10th...

anyone know the specs on a 14' lotus canoe?

If that's the worst of it, I would buy it and put it into working order.

    Help me pick a tandem

No. The crack was where one might expect it - right at the edge of but not overlapping the foam core. That's where flexible meets inflexible. Same as described in that Northstar video. Edit: should have said cracks, plural.

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Yep. That's probably the most affordable option, or maybe the Rossi BC125. But Voille also has (or had?) the scaled version of their V6 BC, which I think is a better ski than the Kom and more durable than the Rossi.

    Help me pick a tandem

The damage on my Moccasin was right on the edge of the core. Didn't seem to me like a difficult repair. What I wonder about is damage that is under the core where the inside of the outer shell is inaccessible. Anyway, it's just a question.

    Mutating Ticks

Here it's mostly Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. A coworker of mine almost died from it. He was out of commission for a year, his formerly athletic physique had been reduced to skin and bones when he returned. I'm extremely cautious about ticks. Fortunately, it's pretty easy to predict where and...

    Mutating Ticks

Do moose not have ticks? Or is it because there aren't nearly as many moose?

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Same here, as far as I've noticed. It's kind of annoying that the AT crowd seems to be all claiming to Telemark, when they're actually just doing parallel turns. I have stuck to Telemark because, for me, it's not all about the trip down. I like to pick a direction and explore, and I prefer...

    Help me pick a tandem

I wonder how often anyone suffers core damage in a composite hull. All the significant damage I've ever seen personally has been stems and chines.

    Help me pick a tandem

Maybe, Nova Craft's Blue Steel? Probably Swift, but I'm not sure which layup. A Polaris in Black HD sounds like a pretty safe bet.... when they get around to it. I count five kevlar canoes here from as many different brands though, and while I'm not bashing any of them broadside on rocks, three...

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Very similar to my setup for the steeps. In fact, I have Switchbacks mounted on two different pairs of skis. The cool kids scoff, but old school works for me.

    Burning plastic

I avoid it. But I don't get wrapped around the axle over a wrapper being burned from time to time. I'm not sure putting it in a landfill is better in the long run, but I'll admit that it's a very small part of that too. Like Mem, I feel like there's a host of bigger problems to dwell on.

    Solitude isn't for everyone

One of my favorite things is a moonlight paddle on The Meanders (if you know, you know). Bats, beavers, roosting eagles, and the occasional moose - but none of the daytime crowd.

    What got you into canoeing?

Kind of a hard question for me to answer definitively. My family had no connection with boats of any kind. When I was about ten, I went to a summer kid's camp at a lake in the Sierras outside of Grass Valley. There was a fleet of aluminum canoes there, which we all were going to get some...

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

Well I already mentioned my Bowron Lakes trip. Everything else is tentative and depending on other obligations. But there are a few things I'm considering. More time in Eastern Idaho and Western Wyoming, which might include the upper Green, the Yellowstone, or the south fork of the Snake. High...
