    Outdoor confidence

Another way to look at it is the competency model that looks at ability vs. difficulty - in this case paddling, but could be other outdoor activities. You can look at it individually - so for me the difficulty of trips that I can do decreases based on the type of paddling I am doing and my...

Ever have a downriver wind push you up river?

I vote for the alien tractor beam. Either that or the Secret Service has installed a new security system to keep people away from Trump National. Obviously a sail boat can move (indirectly) into the wind using the position of the sail and the boat. You wouldn't think that a canoe or a kayak...

    Hatchet or Saw?

I usually bring both - small hatchet (which is usually used more for pounding tent pegs) and a folding saw. If I could only have one it would be the saw. We like to cook on the fire and sit around the fire, so we spend a fair amount of time gathering and cutting wood. The small stuff you can...

Tripping canoe in class III rapids

Wow - they are amazing. Safe to say that gear was tied in, and a good spray deck helps. Funny to see them sitting on the capsized canoe and paddling out. I guess you hang on to your boat for dear life there.

"Paddle out of Peril" video with Omer Stringer

We agree that we wouldn't tether. Interested to hear what others say about that. Now that I think about it, it probably doesn't matter if the boat is filled with gear and water, or just water. Float bags would definitely help, but they take up space you might need for gear. It is pretty...

    Moose

Paddling with some friends on the Androscoggin in NH. Got a late start, so they were waiting for me at the put in in Errol. Speed limit on Route 16 up to Errol is 30 miles/hour, with lots of signs warning of moose crossing. I was stuck behind a van going the speed limit. When I got a chance to...

"Paddle out of Peril" video with Omer Stringer

I love to paddle whitewater, but haven’t done much tripping in whitewater other than real easy stuff. When I paddle solo I am in a dedicated solo boat, so I am in the middle with one bag in the bow and one bag in the stern. They fit snug, so usually I don’t tie them in. If I was in extended...

"Paddle out of Peril" video with Omer Stringer

Bill Mason does actually mention paddling from the stern seat at 19:53 of his Solo Basics video. Otherwise he is either on the bow seat or kneeling in the center.

Amazing how you got back in the boat. I have tried and tried, but drop the gunnel into the water and swamp the boat every time. I guess I need to practice some more.

I'd love to go to this sometime. Unfortunately not this year. :(

"Paddle out of Peril" video with Omer Stringer

I’m mostly a river paddler, so rescue is pretty basic – hold on to your paddle, get in the safe swimming position until you can roll over and swim aggressively into an eddy or to shore. If you are in mild conditions you can grab your boat, maybe flip it over and try to push it to shore. If not...

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

A more typical example of object removal from a trip yesterday - getting rid of the paddle.

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

Different picture - original and with the paddlers gone It made some weird changes to the waves on the big rock in the middle, but if you didn't have the original to compare to you'd probably never notice. I could figure out how to fix stuff like that, but usually it comes out good enough...

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

Sample of what you can do with editing software - do you like it with the bush, or no bush? Four clicks and it is done. Comparing both you can see faint shadows where it removed the object, but if you didn't have the original to compare you'd have a hard time figuring it out.

    Outdoor Canoe Storage

Mine live in the basement - in and out through the bulkhead. Kind of a pain with the bigger tandem canoes, but it is nice to have them out of the weather. Otherwise, an outdoor rack of some kind.

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

I go with a point-and-shoot waterproof camera that I can stick in my PFD pocket. I have used both of these over the years – Olympus Tough and Pentax WG. I have the Tough TG-6 - they are now on the TG-7. The camera has a ton of capabilities that I don’t use. I use two preset functions – Landscape...

    Any free webmastery out there?

Thanks for posting the link to the wayback machine. I've done the section of the Pemi described in the The Flood twice - with Doug in 2019 and with Matt in 2021, so I have heard the story twice. When I went looking for the website I couldn't find it, so it was great to actually read the story.

Tripping canoe in class III rapids

You're right - it's a Dagger Legend. The Dagger logo is pretty easy to to see, but I never would have gotten the Legend. I zoomed in to 400%, and that is the logo. You have good eyes for boats. I wouldn't recommend it anyway. Not sure I will do it again. The carry down is terrible (especially...

Tripping canoe in class III rapids

Once I saw the guy on the paddle board go through I knew the line I was going to take. I figured if he could run it standing on a paddle board then I should be able to run it kneeling in a canoe. I got through fine.
