Hi Canoe Daddy! Keep those puns coming...they provide much needed comic relief. Nothing like a puntastic paddler to put a smile on my face! Gail

    Unfulfilled Tripping Dreams?

Ppine...my sentiments exactly! Canoeing was one of the most important pieces of my life. When my husband and I could no longer paddle, at first we were heartbroken. But we decided to find a new way to experience nature, through day hiking, and are ready to move forward to the next crossroads.

Rutabaga Paddlesports in Madison, Wisconsin, is Closing (NO - Staying Open)

Yes! I'm so happy that Rutabaga will be staying open and hopefully be acquired by another person(s) who will value this business and its customers highly. I have so much respect for Daren and his wife. Can anyone provide an update on Rutabaga's situation?

    Travelling and Paddling with Cats

Over the past year, I've viewed several YouTube videos of paddling cats. A really entertaining and sweet film can be found at DITL: Solo van life with 2 cats. In this episode, the twosome (from Canada) seem to be in a solo canoe. After thinking about this, would you ever consider a feline as...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

My favorite (and only) solo canoe was a Blackhawk Fishhawk, purchased from a local canoe shop in the 80s. Reasons? Perfect for my size (petite), lightweight, well suited for midwestern, class I, gravel bottom streams with occasional I+ riffles. No rocker, but still was able to pull off quick...

Late Season Canoe Poling on the Union River

Steve, thanks for sharing your video...you make poling look so easy! Here in central IL, have never seen folks poling their canoes...then of course we don't have many rapids in our creeks!

    Photo of the day

Photo from Olive Branch, of the Salt Fork, East Central Illinois @1995. I am paddling my Blackhawk Fish Hawk, which was my beloved river "partner" from 1989-2021. Sorry for the fuzzy look...this is a "photo of a photo" using my phone camera.

    Mégiscane River, Québec

Thanks for this explanation. Without a map it was difficult to determine your location vis-a- vis train station/direction train was traveling. It seems like it would be possible to arrive at the river, just travelling via train from Montreal, with help from the outfitter...but sounds extremely...

    Mégiscane River, Québec

Hi Erica, whoops! upon re-reading your TR, it appears you boarded the train and headed south, getting off before Monet ...sorry for misunderstanding! According to the web, the train route north to Cochrane ON was discontinued many years ago. Also the Montreal to Senneterre trip takes...

Late Season Canoe Poling on the Union River

Riffle-Raff, thanks for your fascinating report and video! What a beautiful river! I am a "retired" solo paddler who knows very little about poling. So have a couple of questions. Do you always paddle upstream on your poling trips? Does your wife paddle her own canoe? Or were she and your baby...

    Mégiscane River, Québec

Erica, thank you for sharing your inspiring trip journals. Just one curious question for you. I just looked up train service to Senneterre PQ ... no active route listed north of there on the Via Rail website. So what train service did you take north of Senneterre to be dropped off at your...
