    Felt safe until now

I’ve always been a little nervous in the bush after watching “Deliverance” I would think you can minimize the risk with a portage or two.

Great TR so far. I like that you included the amount of time along with distance covered. You averaged almost 2.7 mph which I think is very good, especially with that hull. You must not have taken many breaks, if any, and I wondered if you had a tailwind. I'm a Costco chicken expert. I get two...

    Eagle Eats Great Blue Heron

I considered that Tom, and a quick google search confirmed it. It's not even legal to have a blue jay feather I've found a lot of dead stuff including a bald eagle and a manatee, and knew enough not to take parts of those.

    Eagle Eats Great Blue Heron

Thinking about this a little it may have been an opportunity the eagle couldn't pass up. The eagle has the habit of roosting in the trees almost right behind where the kill took place. He goes back in the trees where you can't see him, I assume to rest or sleep. It's possible that when the heron...

    Eagle Eats Great Blue Heron

I doubt the heron was injured, but you never know. The only thing I’ve seen the eagles eat at my lake were fish, with two exceptions. Years ago my neighbor had a big white domestic duck of his eaten by one. The other was last winter when the lone nesting eagle killed a beaver and pulled it up...

    Eagle Eats Great Blue Heron

Yeah, the eagles and herons always coexisted on the lake and I had never seen them go after ducks or geese which I would think would be an easy meal. I figured that they preferred fish and didn't hassle the birds and hopefully not my cats. There are new eagles on my lake after one of the nesting...

    Eagle Eats Great Blue Heron

My place in Pa is a wildlife magnet, with beaver, otter, eagles and deer almost daily sightings, along with regular coyote howls and yips. A friend who was visiting yesterday sitting on my couch saw a heron coming in for a landing across the lake. A few minutes later he asked what that white...

It sounds like he won’t have a problem carrying it, I was thinking more about paddling it. It shouldn’t be a problem until there is wind and/or waves, for safety reasons.

Paddling advice for long, flat, skinny boats

The easier a boat turns the less energy it takes to get back on track. I’ve wondered if this could be an energy saver compared to a straight tracker. My guess is it would, more so for single side paddling than hit and switch.

Sorry about your brother Darrell. If your Grandson doesn't have any canoeing experience you should think about getting him some instructional books or videos at the least. That's a big boat to just go out there and wing it.

    Tumpline ?

Yeah, bending forward at the hips is better description then just leaning forward. It's what enables friction to hold the pack in place. You will have better results with a canvas pack and a natural fiber shirt than you will with a nylon pack and a nylon jacket, I. would think.

    Getting in and Getting out

The problem with getting older as a canoeist is that big canoe are easier getting in and out of because of their stability and potentially higher seats, but big canoes can be too heavy. So far my composite Seliga at 40 lbs is light enough and is stable. I still mostly paddle my w/c boats but can...

    Tumpline ?

Sorry to hear that jdeerfoot. The advice I would give to someone trying out a tump is to adjust it on the long side and shorten it as needed. If it's too short it will put too much weight on your head at first Have it loose enough that you can barely get any weight on it. As you lean forward...

    Tumpline ?

Thanks Robin, I hope I still have it. I let myself go this past winter. I was eating crappy, gained weight and got lazy, at one point I was up to two naps a day. I've turned things around and got some strength back but still lack stamina. It is a real helpful tool PW, and I think it can help at...

    Tumpline ?

I think there is a potential possibility to hurt your neck and I have tweaked mine. That being said my wife has had a bad neck for longer than she's been using a tump. Her chiropractor won't even adjust it, and at one time she was scheduled for surgery. I've always been surprised it works for...

    Tumpline ?

My wife and I have been fans for almost 35 years. Using a tumpline spreads the load between your shoulders, head and your back. Leaning forward with the tump helps get the load over your center of gravity so it's not pulling back on your shoulders and it's not on your hips like with a waist...

    paddle sizing

I have come up with a couple formulas for paddle sizing that work pretty well. One is to measure from the tip of your middle finger down the back of your forearm to your funny bone. Multiply this by 3 for a bent shaft and add 6 inches for a straight shaft. Probably the quickest one is to...
