I've read quite a bit about both, but I have not seen any head-to-head comparisons. I've also paddled both, but never at the same time. I'll say one thing, I very much want to arrange a head-to-head with SRT, the RockSTAR, and the new D-fly 15!
There is definitely something to be said for Royalex or T-Formex on rocky rivers to be sure. I have a Camper and a Penobscot; if I do the Allagash with a partner I'll definitely take one of them. But the SRT and RockSTAR just seem like such good river trippers - seems a shame not to use them up...
I will try to get it out there for you to look at, that would be awesome. Unfortunately I am rather booked on weekends for a while; between Christmas Bird Counts and guiding I do not have a singled weekend free until February! I actually wanted to test paddle a Yellowstone Solo as it is - I've...
So I have an interesting internal debate going on. I have always LOVED the SRT - and on my Yukon trip this past year I realized how badly I want and can use a good river-tripping solo. Of course the SRT immediately entered my mind, but once I got home I had an opportunity to grab a brand new...
I attended this workshop back in 2023 - absolutely fantastic! Very highly recommended, if nothing else it will add some fun maneuvers to your repertoire that can spice even mundane paddling trips...
Try a WildFIRE - hands down the most "fun to paddle" canoe ever IMHO! Much more maneuverable than any you mentioned, ideally paddled kneeling, great for a combo lake and river tripping, creekin', and joy paddling. The design was originally built by Bell but the mold was moved to NY and built by...
It's a LLOOOOONNGG boat with no rocker, must be a bear to maneuver without heeling (and with sitting on the bucket seat I imagine that can be kind of interesting). Guessing it is optomized for paddling with a spray deck on large water. I think if I were going to paddle accross the Great Lakes or...
Do you love it?!? I had that boat reserved but the transport to Maryland wasn't going to work before leaving on my trip to the Yukon so I backed out - have been kicking myself for not finding a way to make it happen. I love the SRT, especially a red SRT, and this one seemed pretty well perfect!
If you're not planning on class 2 2+ rapids I am sure the Huron will fit your needs perfectly. My hope is that Esquif increases the T-Formex lite offerings to include the Huron - in which case the Huron 15 becomes even more alluring. I feel the Huron 15 is quite comperable to the Old Town...
Tried loading out the canoe today. Still a few things to figure out (I didn't attach painters and lines to my gear), but this is the general idea I'm thinking:
This is more than I've ever carried on a trip. Since originally posting I have expanded my gear list somewhat, mainly because we are...
Oh I FULLY agree - I do not have a dehydrator or freeze-drier of any sort, but this is most certainly a long-term goal for me. Usually I am out up to 9 days or so, but doing these longer trips it would save a TON of waste (and ultimately I think money) to make my own, plus it will probably taste...
I know this is a common thing to do, and I have been thinking of doing so specifically to save space. Ultimately it will not save total waste, but clearly would reduce the volume of waste on the trip. I think it would also save a slight amount of weight. I have been a bit hesitant to do so...
I think it will start to get a bit monotonous after a bit, but I try to mix and match things to give different flavor combinations. I have never gone quite this long, but it has been my experience that it's not the hugest concern becuase you get so hungry that any sustinence is tasty! The...
I have exactly zero insider knowledge about this, but I heard through the grapevine that there may be a couple working with Dave that has the long-term goal of taking over? Maybe I shouldn't say anything, but at least the rumor I heard sounded promising...
Food is a bit more challenging to document. Not fully loaded yet - I am going to add a few more backpacking meals and bannock to the mix, plus lunch and breakfast items (and snacks). I have always struggled with barrel organization so I purchased Recreational Barrel Works stuff this year to make...
Agreed - and I may leave the wind jacket at home. It's a thicker Mountain Hardwear Windstopper fleece that also has some warmth, so I am on the fence as I like the added warmth but it is the single bulkiest clothing item I have...
I am going to make some additional replies later with food, footwear, and other ancillary items and so forth, but these are all fantastic ideas - thank you! I would LOVE to do some paddling in the Territories, sounds AMAZING! I forgot my coat bag in the original loadout pictures above. I have a...
I have a lighter in my PFD, but I agree that tinder would be nice. I often carry homemade tinder I make with cotton and Vaseline, but I'm concerned as to whether bears can smell that...
15m / 50ft yes - I have one of those combo package deals that has the rope, whistle, and 50' of rope and the entire thing is in a fabric bailer; attached to my thwart. I also have a 100' throw rope/bag that for the life of me I cannot find, so I'll either make another or buy one (they're...
