Pondering and Plans A, B, C, and D Early morning, raindrops splat on the tent. I jump up and spread the fly over the tent. There's no room to stake it. So it just lies there. I listen to the droplets hit the tent and hope it won't leak. The forest is quiet. The falls burble. I’m out boiling...

    Photo of the day

I only used it for song identification. Before you leave civilization, you have to download the data base for the location you will be in. So, my merlin is typically set for Florida and that won't work in Quebec. I had to download a Canadian date base. Also, the microphone picks up calls that...

Merlin app. I love it. It even worked without wireless, which I do not understand. But I've been able to use the song and note identifier without any wireless connectivity available, such as on remote trips.

There are snail kites seen along the Withlachoochee River. That’s a great photo of a bird not often seen. For those unfamiliar with the snail kite, it eats only apple snails.

    Reservoir Manicouagan QC Aug/Sep 2025

Love the cliffs. Thanks for the great write up. It certainly looks like a worthy location. Easy to see every time I open up a Canadian map.

I’m working on it. Some parts are easier than others.

    Sadie's Bloodvein Trip Report

I believe there is a hilarious scene in a book by Steinbeck in which he leaves the US with his dog. The Canadians won’t let him in because he doesn’t have the required papers for the dog. He turns around, goes back to the US and they won’t let the dog in because he doesn’t have the required papers.

    NOLS Wilderness Medicine $2.99

NOLS Wilderness Medicine book, usually around $15 is on sale in the Kindle edition for $2.99 today. I don't know how long this sale might last. The kindle edition is going to be lighter weight if you carry a tablet, than the large print book. NOLS WILDERNESS FIRST AID

    Sparkleberry Swamp, November 2025

When the water is high, I can get turned around on Fisheating Creek, a local place I know well. On the Suwannee River, when the water is high, racing times come in much slower because boats waste time trying to find the river in all the water. Just saying…

How much have you paddled this year?

You, dear sir, are my inspiration.

As far as I know, all Canadian trains will carry canoes and related baggage for a fee. The train will drop you off anywhere you want. The train will also stop for you at any point and let you board the canoe with all your gear. I boarded a VIA train at Senneterre going east, toward Monet. I...

Thank you for your compliment and vote of confidence. Mostly crowds of people terrify me.

Yes, Gale. I will keep writing. We are less than 1/3 through the trip.

Bench vs. Bucket Seats: Which Is Better On A Canoe?

I rented a winonah with a bucket seat for a trip in the Adirondack’s. I hated it. I can’t sit in a bucket and paddle. My body just isn’t built that way. Regular bench seats have always been my preference because they allow for so much variety in seating options and where to put legs and feet...

Nope. Nothing so easy. If I ever try this again, I will probably go in on the Kekek.

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

Traveling alone, my biggest fear are the two-legged ones, for sure.

How much have you paddled this year?

I broke an ankle which has left me with numbness and funny sensations in that foot and calf. That ankle also tends to roll. And I’ve lost proprioception in that limb, meaning that unless I am looking at it, I don’t know where it is. I have many of the same problems you do, getting in and out of...

    Mégiscane River, Québec

Connecting Day In my struggle to pull the packs off the train tracks and down the embankment, my body, without permission from me, did a backward somersault down the embankment. My fall stopped abruptly when I became wedged between two trees, one on my left shoulder and one on my right hip...
