Books that made a profound impact

Campbell Of The Yukon After my first trip on the Upper Yukon River, I found an old copy detailing Robert Campbell's canoe journey from the McKenzie to the Yukon via the Liard River to found Fort Selkirk for the Hudson Bay Company. It makes most of us look like a bunch of wussies.

    Recommendation for outfitter in Whitehorse

I've bought canoes and dealt with Kanoe People several times as well as sending others there for canoe help. The McDougalls were top notch in all instances. The young people working there were very knowledgeable and hard working. I hope to see them in June if this Covid thing doesn't stop us...

Books that made a profound impact

I think I have most of Cal Rutstrum's books that I've read many times. As a very young canoeist, I met Cal and wife in Grand Marais, MN.

Wiggy Bags or other sleeping bags?

Wiggy's Bags are very heavy in the models that I have.

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

Neighbor kids wait in front of my house in the dark for the school bus. I watch frequently for stray sled dogs and bears.

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

Those bears wouldn't be tolerated in this neighborhood.

    Matches improved!

I sure miss the Ohio Blue Tip brand of matches.

Providing the Covid restrictions are not limiting, we hope to do the Pelly and perhaps the Big Salmon.

    A Close Bear Call

That bear appears more curious than threatening. Often they are sizing you up and are showing you how big they are or how threatening they are in an effort to make you run. I've had success with standing my ground, opening my coat and holding the coat out like wings with each hand. About like...

    Comfortable Belt

This past year I've found the most comfortable and functional belt of my many decades......many of my others are going in the trash. Check out the web belt by Marsupial Gear....inexpensive....slightly stretchy but kind stiff.....very light and functional buckle that doesn't gouge...

    Rigging Tarps

In a recent thread we discussed setting up a tarp quickly to escape sudden rain showers. A few years ago, a friend gave me a bunch of CamJams that I rig on a long piece of paracord. I keep several of these attached to the tarp grommets and I can quickly attach the tarp to surrounding trees by...

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

That appears to be a good sized black bear as the ears appear small and the belly is low.

    Camping in the rain

Impertech long rain coats over wool and fleece. A tarp quickly set up followed by a twig stove

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

Six of us were sitting around the campfire on a miserable day last August when a large boar grizzly walked right into our camp with 30 feet of us. My shotgun was in my tent about 50 feet away. when we all made a ruckus he walked away. One person alone may have had a bad time. At night we set...

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

We never canoe or backcountry travel without a firearm here in Alaska or Yukon Territory and it's always a short 12ga with Brenneke slugs.

    Duluth Packs

Although I've lived in Alaska five decades, I grew up in Northern Minnesota and still have 3 or 4 Duluth Packs stored away. They haven't been used in years. I looked through the Duluth Pack website recently and was astounded at the cost of new ones. If there is interest among the traditionalists...

A couple of nice old camps

I can recall canoeists and backwoods types wearing the traditional high top moccasins and wool socks wit pants tucked in to keep out bugs. Some of Cal Rutstrum's pics show him in moccasins.

A couple of nice old camps

My wool "buffalo plaid" shirt is badly worn but was recently given the same shirt in a heavy fleece by Outback Trading Company. Very comfortable.

    Motor mount question

I've used side mounts extensively in the past and yes, some motors will throw spray into the canoe. I've used a piece of rubber matting as a spray shield on one of my canoes.

Possible Freighter Purchase, thinking of Scott 21ft H.B

My little town in interior Alaska has several HB owners. Most of us bought our HBs from Kanoe People in Whitehorse, YT. For the large rivers like the Yukon River, I usually run a 20HP OB and friends that run the shallower, braided rivers like the Tanana run surface drives. Many of my friends use...
