    Wenonah Solo Yoke Options/Alternatives

I would be really surprised if the weight of the boat being carried with a traditionally mounted yoke would be enough to damage the hull. If that was the case then the hull should crumple if, while paddling the canoe, you placed a hand on the gunwales and lifted your butt off the seat. I expect...

Thoughts on double bladed paddles from a somewhat experienced double blader.

I think we're all aware of each others preferences and prejudices. No one is going to convince anyone else that they're wrong. Alan

    Trip Recommendations in Northern Sask

My only experience with Northern Saskatchewan was starting at Wollaston Lake and failing to make Nueltin Lake (I did make it across the Nunavut border). It was still a wonderful out and back trip in which I didn't see a soul for 40 days. You can drive to Wollaston Lake and there are multiple...

How are they packaged now that they don't fit well? Can you just repackage them into zip locks? Alan

    Foot/ankle support when kneeling

I assume they're attached to the floor to keep them from moving around when getting into/out of position? Alan

Raising seat height in my new Esqiif Echo?

Attaching directly to the gunwales should be fine. The hangers would actually lessen the structural integrity as opposed to bolting it directly to the gunwales. Since I primarily sit I would start by padding the seat to the correct height and then seeing how that affected sitting stability. If...

    Foot/ankle support when kneeling

I'm a 99% sitter. I went for a paddle this weekend and kneeled for a bit. As usual I find the most uncomfortable part of kneeling to be my ankle joints. When I kneel my toes are pointed toward the stern with the top of my foot in contact with the hull and after a while this stretched position...

Reminder re November 2026 Fund Drive

No, worries. Since you quoted the (now deleted) post in your response it should make sense to future generations mining this website for treasures so I'm going to leave it up. Alan

Paddling advice for long, flat, skinny boats

Easier said than done when trying to ascend a river over a gravel bar in 5" of water. I've used my carbon paddles as poles many times and I've also done plenty of repairs and reinforcing to them over the years. It's just part of the game. Alan

    Poll: Wood Strip Material Choice

Good point. When I referred to it as 'king' I simply meant that it fits the task well and seems to be the most widely available. Perhaps calling it the 'default' wood would be a better description. Alan

    Poll: Wood Strip Material Choice

I've made a lot of them from WRC and one from Cottonwood. I would like to try Basswood but it's not an easy thing to find unless you have a local sawmill that saws and sells it or can saw your logs. Even though cottonwood is pretty soft I was surprised how much harder it was than WRC. Sanding...

Paddling advice for long, flat, skinny boats

The grip might have gotten hot on the really stubborn one, I can't remember for sure. But otherwise, no, as long as the heat is applied at the grip/shaft junction I haven't had to use any hand protection. Just keep twisting as you add heat until it comes free. Alan

Paddling advice for long, flat, skinny boats

I've been able to easily remove and reuse the grips on three ZRE paddles by applying some heat with a heat gun. I had one that was very reluctant to release (but finally did) and one that was completely ruined (plastic grip that melted). I cut the shaft shorter and use electrical tape to...
