Impact of Heeling - Canoe Design

The Malecite is an interesting sideline to this discussion, since what little rocker it has is in the stern. Unfortunately, it's been a very long time since I last paddled it solo. So I can't say much about that. Paddling it tandem with my wife, it doesn't get leaned much to turn, other than...

1994 Old Town Penobscot 16 Added to Fleet

Try again with the JB. I did a "temporary" repair on the cracked aluminum rail on my Penobscot that never came off. I think you just have to get the surface real clean and possibly sand off any oxidation before adding the JB. Come to think of it, I did a field repair years ago on an aluminum...

    Physical Canoeing Resolutions

That's my plan. I try to keep active through winter - with skis if possible, and with the drysuit until ice. Biggest issue is avoiding injury related interruptions.

Lend me your eyes... a few q's on new to me Great Canadian 14

I'm with Mem. It's a good $100 canoe, and I would give it the Rust-Oleum treatment and paddle it. Wouldn't give the spider cracks any further thought.

1994 Old Town Penobscot 16 Added to Fleet

The Pal in a lightweight composite would be nice, but the Penobscot is one of the best Royalex canoes IMO. Don't know that I would make that upgrade vs picking up something with rocker as an option (or a solo). But that's just me.

Is this Old Town worth $250? it has many scratches and well worn gel coat

I can't tell from the photos if it's royalex or poly. But the scratches shown all look superficial and not worth worrying about. You really need to see what the inside looks like. Replacement seats and thwarts could easily add as much as $100 or more, unless you're handy enough to make your own...

    Is this foam core?

BTW - enjoy that Appy! I hear it's a great river canoe, and especially good for poling.

    Is this foam core?

Even if it's epoxy or the ABS layer just under the skin, it's best to not leave it uncovered. On a gouge that size showing ABS, I usually skin over it with G-flex epoxy mixed with pigment to guard from UV damage. But at the very least, give it some paint. If it is the foam core, you should be...

    Paddle Blade Edge Protection

That also looks like a good way to restore a badly damaged paddle. @Black_Fly , on my paddles carved from a single stick, I've simply painted a thin coat of epoxy on the tip. But I only use them in deep water,so they rarely touch anything harder than a log.

1994 Old Town Penobscot 16 Added to Fleet

Depends on the difficulty of the features and the length of the flat stretches. But I generally would prefer the Prospector styles for any rivers where maneuverability is desirable. I had both the Penobscot 16 and the NC Prospector for a while. The Penobscot was faster, but the Prospector was...

    What about a Wenonah Moccasin?

Lately, I've been choosing the Moccasin for most of my day trips on the local lake. It's becoming evident to me that this canoe, when paddled empty, presents significantly more sail to the wind than the Solitude. I'm going to have to see how it does with a moderate load. At any rate, it still...

    Living better electronically

I've been doing pretty much the same for several years now with my Fuji waterproof camera, cellphone carried in a dry pouch, and Inreach for backup. I've been pleasantly surprised by how robust all this tech has been so far, but won't stop carrying printed maps and compass. What the tech does...

    Which Canoe For Summer Solo?

Yeah, those are the places I'd want to avoid in anything without more rocker.

    Which Canoe For Summer Solo?

You must be the guy to ask - would the Solitude have been a good choice for that trip if it was lighter? Or would a Wildfire be better?

    Which Canoe For Summer Solo?

Yeah, it's not going to turn like a canoe with more rocker. And we all know there are varying degrees of class 2. But I also take into account my style of river running in most cl2 uses more sideslips and backferries than quick turns. (BTW, part of my test was paddling in reverse, which it did...

    Which Canoe For Summer Solo?

Since we're revisiting this, I do have something to add (and I want to get this in writing before I forget). It isn't much, since I only spent about 30 minutes in the P14. But I think it's relevant. Although I found it easy to paddle in a straight line, it didn't take much effort to turn or even...

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Oh yeah, there's that. And BTW - once you're retired, there seems to be an assumption that you need more fixit projects to fill your time.

Old Town Next as a normal solo canoe

Hey, thanks @dutchlennart , @Penns Woods , and @M Clemens for the reviews and history of the Next! I've had people ask me about it but never had a good answer. Always watching for one to borrow for evaluation, but none turn up. Can't justify buying one. I have suspected that it's a reasonably...
