    Field sharpening

I've takin a sharpening stone on trips before. Down time on a trip is a good time to do gear maintenance and repairs. I also have one of those round diamond hones that you have, I think it's in my repair/ tool kit. I found it at a campsite, it's a little course to get a really fine edge compared...

    Must have medical items?

The Dr. I took out was my wife's younger female cousin who was an ER doc in Baltimore. At that time in my late 30's the significance of the safety factor of having a Dr along didn't occur to me. Years later in my early 60's when I took along my new friend, Nurse Bob, I was well aware of it.

Lynx Lake Loop, Willow Ak. Daytrip

I've been wanting to do the Placer River from Spencer Glacier and was disappointed to find they won't take a hard sided boat on the train. I have recently seen a canoe at the landing on the Placer at the highway so I figure it must be navigable upstream, especially if you can catch the rising...

Bent vs. straight paddle - direct comparison plus bonus footage

I understand there are different body mechanics and different type boats, but it's still a paddle pushing a boat through the water. I thought maybe it was the height of the paddler above the water. The sprint racers have that high kneel, which would make a difference in the angle the paddle...

Bent vs. straight paddle - direct comparison plus bonus footage

What I find interesting is that it appears that the straight shaft paddle is the paddle of choice for sprint racers. Why is this the case when most other types of canoe racers use a bent? It is not universal that a bent shaft is faster.

    Must have medical items?

I've taken a nurse on one trip and a doctor on another. They're good for piece of mind, but you need to feed them.

I didn't expect a pack boat, but those Pakcanoes are capable tripping boats. You should have a lot of fun with it. It sounds perfect for a Spencer Glacier trip. Did you float the Placer River to the highway? I've been using a kevlar Mad River Malecite on the trails in the Wildlife Refuge. It's...

    Photo of the day

I'll take a stab at it. I think the bottom two are Old Towns. The first a Trapper then maybe a 16' Guide. The Chestnut may be a Pal or Chum, it doesn't look beefy enough for a Prospector. The stripper looks a little bigger, maybe a Prospector or EM White.

    Photo of the day

$4,000.00 sounds like a lot, but I wonder how it compares to sending a kid to sleep away camp for a month.

    Photo of the day

I always envied the kids lucky enough to attend one of those canoe camps. There is a good article on field repair of canvas canoes in there. It was very informative. You can use a piece of your blue jeans to repair canvas, but don't use your underwear. To repair a puncture in your planking use...

Back to the crater (this time for real?) Manicouagan Reservoir

Good luck! That lake has interested me ever since I first saw it. Looking forward to a report.

Single sided correction strokes - Does your paddle touch the hull?

My goal is to not disturb the animals and I usually do give them their space. But that bull moose I photographed the other day brought out the selfishness in me. I wanted that picture. I didn't plan on getting as close as I did to this moose. I got caught up looking into my phone screen and...

Single sided correction strokes - Does your paddle touch the hull?

Robin brings up a good point and this is something I am guilty of. I am more considerate of the animals when they are already stressed, usually in the winter and spring. At that time of year the animals may be on the edge of survival and I'll inconvenience myself to give them their space. So...

What Size Spinning Rod for Paddlecraft?

I like Mark Twain's take on fishing. Paraphrased as best as I remember. "Fishing, is a jerk on one end of the line waiting for a jerk on the other end"

Single sided correction strokes - Does your paddle touch the hull?

It was fellow forum member Jontario of "Lost Lakes". He has a very Dry sense of humor, maybe that's how he gets away with it. I don't think prying off the gunnel will cause much damage, dragging your paddle along the gunnel sure will. My Granddaughter had that bad habit and it caused damage...

    Mora knives for camp.

An old employer of mine, Gene Moe, killed a grizzly on Kodiak Island. He used a combination of boxing and stabbing. He killed the bear but had extensive injuries and was lucky to survive. I haven't taken a Mora on a trip in a long time, but if I ever get back to salt water I'll be taking my...

Single sided correction strokes - Does your paddle touch the hull?

35 years ago they were teaching the cross draw in New York. My wife paddles bow and I don't ever remember seeing her do a bow pry. The only differences I've noticed between American and Canadian paddlers is, like I mentioned before, the Canadians have an aversion to switching sides. They also...

Lynx Lake Loop, Willow Ak. Daytrip

I agree, for about 6 or 7 hundred bucks you can be at 62 degrees latitude in 12 hours from anywhere in the lower 48. You can be in the land of volcanoes and glaciers, grizzly bears and wolves and have some amazing fishing for trout and salmon. You won't need permits or reservations and won't run...

Doing non-racing things with a racing boat?

See if you can get a test paddle. That should tell you all you need to know as to weather you'll like it or not.

What shipping charges for a canoe paddle have you paid recently (and what carrier)?

Shaw and Tenney charged me 50 bucks for a 57 inch paddle a few years ago. I don't remember the other details.
