Best Places to Live in the US for Canoeing?

If you could choose one place to live in the US that has the best canoeing opportunities, where would it be? I thought this would be a fun thread, and it is applicable to me and my family as I just started a fully remote job, and I now have the freedom to live wherever I choose as long as I...

    Snake infested water bodies

I had walked through this area 3 times already while carefully scanning for snakes. The 4th time I was complacent and talking to my dad and brother over my shoulder. I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye and jumped in the opposite direction. When I looked back to where I was about to...

    Wind threshold

I was on a weekend trip to Massasauga Provincial Park with my wife, 4 yr old daughter, and our dog this past weekend. We encountered similar weather to what @yknpdlr just described. On Saturday we had a 15 mph headwind, 20 mph gusts and got over an inch of rain in 50 degree temps. Sunday the...

    Best & worst campsites ever?

I remember seeing the pot in the tree. I think there was actually more than one. I will say we stopped at the farthest east campsite on the north shore of Fish Pond and there had to be 50 beer cans in the fire pit. I was in complete disbelief that someone would go through the effort to portage...

Your three favorite pieces of comfort or luxury canoe camping gear

    1. Big Agnes Boundary Deluxe Sleeping Pad 2. Titanium French Press for coffee 3. MSR Whisperlite Stove for cooking The boundary deluxe sleeping pad is bulky, but so comfortable I forget it’s a sleeping pad. The French press is light and small and makes great coffee. The stove makes cooking in a...

    Best & worst campsites ever?

I’ve seen this lean-to site on fish pond and can agree it looked like a good one, but it was taken when we arrived this spring. We did find a really nice elevated site off the portage between Fish Pond and Little Fish Pond. It had nice views of little fish pond, caught a breeze, had a flat...

"Sleigh riding" big swells in OC-6 outrigger canoes

That looks incredible! Thanks for sharing @Glenn MacGrady

Grade A boat or a second?

I think the biggest issue with this is that the builder did not bring it to your attention and you found it on your own. I would think a respectable builder would explain the pulled thread issue and ask you how you felt about it before sending you the boat. If you agreed to accept the blemish...

Noel Canoe Demo Nights - Western PA

My wife and I went to Noel Canoe’s demo night tonight on Lake Wilhelm, PA to support @NoelCanoeDad and try out some of the red feather and slipstream boats he has for sale. He has quite the spread right now including a red feather Rockstar, Merlin III, (2) Yellowstone solos, and a bucktail. He...

    Water Flow Data Interpretation

Below I’ve copied a useful link for finding “canoeable” rivers and creeks in western Pennsylvania. My understanding is this site is regularly maintained. It shows whether water levels are “too low”, “canoeable”, or “too high”. It’s a great resource that should be used as a reference alongside...

Swift Osprey (aluminum gunwales) portage options

I know Hemlock makes detachable portage yokes. https://www.hemlockcanoe.com/repair--replacement-parts.html Give them a call and see if they can make one that will work.

Help, I need to expand my horizons.

I know you said you aren’t sure about crossing the border into Canada, but a nice trip with minimal portages can be done in a loop from Hartley Bay Marina on the Lower French River out to the Georgian Bay of Lake Huron and then back up a different channel of the French to Hartley Bay. The drive...

    Paddling in circles

I’ve seen this lake on a map and have always wondered what it would be like in person. I’m really looking forward to this trip report and pictures!

Hauling Two Canoes When Thule Hates You

I thought I would chime in and say that I had to extend my 60” Yakima bars to bring 2 canoes to the WPASCR. I did this by zip tying 2x4’s to the tops of my existing bars. I used (4) 175 lb rated zip ties for each bar. I then used paracord as a back up and securely tied the 2x4’s to the cross bar...

Does anyone have experience paddling a Bell Prodigy?

@recped thanks for the reply. There is definitely both dirt and some UV fading going on. I need to look at the bottom of the hull, haven’t see it in person yet. The price is right, I’m just trying to get some feedback before I find a way to make a space to store this thing.

Does anyone have experience paddling a Bell Prodigy?

I have been presented the opportunity to acquire a royalex Bell Prodigy. Does anyone have experience paddling this canoe? Could you share your thoughts on how it paddles and the conditions you paddled it in? Would this be a good beater whitewater boat for me to “test the waters” in solo...
