How much have you paddled this year?

I have to estimate, because I didn’t keep a log or use a tracking app, but I imagine I paddled somewhere between 75-100 miles this year. This is combining solo and with my family. I expect to have no trouble doubling this next year. I didn’t go on any major trips this year, and we moved right...

    Can Royalex safely freeze?

I just put away my royalex mad river explorer for the season. I recently moved to Saranac Lake, NY, and I now store my canoes in an attached, but unheated, garage. At my old house, this canoe was stored in my basement and never saw temps below 50 degrees F. Now, I expect it will see temps down...

    Rehabbing an MR Freedom

I’ve seen old cane seats, where the cane was removed, they were flipped upside down, and then webbing was wrapped with stainless staples to replace the cane. It turns out great and is a cheap solution to rehab the seats. I’ve seen @NoelCanoeDad do this. He might be able to share some...

    Garage Racks for Canoes

I put up a rack in my garage with 2x4s and construction screws and it’s currently holding 3 canoes and around 180 lbs without issue. I built it so I could put a 4th canoe on small stands underneath it at ground level. It was cheap and easy and feels quite sturdy. I might have $100 in it.

    Getting Kids into Canoeing

I paddled a beat up aluminum canoe once a year at church camp 3 years in a row when I was a kid and didn’t touch one again until I decided to purchase a canoe and bought an old Curtis Northstar at the solo canoe rendezvous a few years ago, now in my 30’s. I wanted to start an activity that I...

What Size Spinning Rod for Paddlecraft?

I agree. When you lose 2 inches on a fast action tip, it’s no longer a fast action, but bringing the repair kit keeps you in the game vs hauling garbage the rest of the trip.

What Size Spinning Rod for Paddlecraft?

I usually bring a 7’ medium weight fast action rod with a 2500 series reel. I use 20 pound braid, but always tie on a 10 pound fluorocarbon leader if fishing for bass or walleye. The leader serves two purposes, it’s less visible than the braid and breaks more easily if snagged. With pike I use a...
