The local canoe club invited to its annual end-of-season paddling event

Looks like a lot of fun! Ironically, in an area where canoeing is unlimited, I probably couldn't find more than three people to join a canoeing club. If I win the lottery, will your club invite me to a gathering?

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

I have heard that these feral hogs are nasty. I just googled them, and apparently they are making their way into Canada, and various levels of government are encouraging their destruction. Google also told me the following: Predation: They can prey on livestock like goats and new born cattle...

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

In lieu of discussing the obvious un-named peril (🔫), you might want to reconsider the goat discussion. Goats are always up for a tussle, and rarely back down. A goat vs feral hog battle could provide an epic chapter to a canoe trip report, and no matter who the winner or loser was, there...

I'm not sure if you are familiar with www.greenval.com Martin Step is the fella that has been handling all of John Winter's designs for many years. He is out of business now, Noah's is handling the plans, but he has left the website up with a lot of valuable info. Over the past 30 years...

Ontario Crown Land non-resident camping permits

Just refrain from discussing politics. People will generally be nice to Americans, but there will always be a few who might get feisty. There are very conservative people here and very liberal people, kinda like the States. I'm friends with all sorts, I just don't engage in political discussions

    Felt safe until now

Lol, that's another weird Canadian law that would be interpreted by whatever CO happened to stop you. For hunting, a shotgun can hold no more than three shells. However, for target shooting, a pump action could have an unlimited magazine. The cloudy spot would be carrying a weapon for wilderness...

    Save the Moose 2025

Temps have been going down to about zero C overnight for a couple weeks now. The hot tent isn't really needed, but it is quite comfortable, I usually sleep on top of the sleeping bag at night. The canoe is a 17 foot prospector, my wife was looking at it askance when we were parked and calling...

    Save the Moose 2025

This is the first year our moose hunt wasn't entirely canoe based. The past few years we have hightailed it down to a local river after work on Friday and paddled or motored into our spot. This year we tried something new. I finally gave in and bought a quad. I gotta say, it's a lot of fun. We...

What next? Need recommendations for a solo-able tandem canoe.

I'd look at a Nova Craft Chestnut Pal. A touch to small for tandem tripping for heavy people, but will do in a pinch, but an excellent solo for bigger fellas.

Well, I wouldn't mess with those guys, er them, or whatever. Shoot, shovel, shut up, that's the Triple S team up here, composed mostly of angry old guys who drink too much beer on a Friday night.

We never used to lock our doors, but the bear problem in G-Town has risen to epic proportions. They have learned how to open car doors and also house doors. When we came back from three days of moose hunting last weekend, a bear had destroyed my garage door, it looked like the army had planted...

3-4 weeks next summer: where to go?

I would suggest breaking it up into a couple of trips. Northern Ontario is certainly within your driving time allocation. Have a look at the Steel Loop and the Marshall Lake Loop, both of which are well documented on this site. If you take time to sniff the flowers and do some fishing, each...

Steel River and a floatplane evacuation - June 2025

Great report! The Diablo vs three ports is always something to consider. I've done Diablo 9 or ten times. My buddy has done them both, he says the three ports is the way to go. When I was 40 and in great shape, I single carried Diablo in under an hour. When I was 50, and not in very good...

Impact of Heeling - Canoe Design

I seem to recall John Winters saying that his asymmetrical canoes tracked best when there was enough weight in the stern to make it squat down a little. I have built and paddled almost all of his designs, and have routinely paddled the Osprey and the Raven heeled, both in tripping and non...
