"Paddle out of Peril" video with Omer Stringer

Bill Mason does actually mention paddling from the stern seat at 19:53 of his Solo Basics video. Otherwise he is either on the bow seat or kneeling in the center.

"Paddle out of Peril" video with Omer Stringer

Amazing how you got back in the boat. I have tried and tried, but drop the gunnel into the water and swamp the boat every time. I guess I need to practice some more.

2024 Pine Barrens Functional Freestyle Workshop, Oct. 11-13

I'd love to go to this sometime. Unfortunately not this year. :(

"Paddle out of Peril" video with Omer Stringer

Our last practice session was 2020 - Riverstrider doing tandem reentries.

"Paddle out of Peril" video with Omer Stringer

I’m mostly a river paddler, so rescue is pretty basic – hold on to your paddle, get in the safe swimming position until you can roll over and swim aggressively into an eddy or to shore. If you are in mild conditions you can grab your boat, maybe flip it over and try to push it to shore. If not...

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

A more typical example of object removal from a trip yesterday - getting rid of the paddle.

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

Different picture - original and with the paddlers gone It made some weird changes to the waves on the big rock in the middle, but if you didn't have the original to compare to you'd probably never notice. I could figure out how to fix stuff like that, but usually it comes out good enough...

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

Sample of what you can do with editing software - do you like it with the bush, or no bush? Four clicks and it is done. Comparing both you can see faint shadows where it removed the object, but if you didn't have the original to compare you'd have a hard time figuring it out.

    Outdoor Canoe Storage

Mine live in the basement - in and out through the bulkhead. Kind of a pain with the bigger tandem canoes, but it is nice to have them out of the weather. Otherwise, an outdoor rack of some kind.

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

I go with a point-and-shoot waterproof camera that I can stick in my PFD pocket. I have used both of these over the years – Olympus Tough and Pentax WG. I have the Tough TG-6 - they are now on the TG-7. The camera has a ton of capabilities that I don’t use. I use two preset functions – Landscape...

    Any free webmastery out there?

Thanks for posting the link to the wayback machine. I've done the section of the Pemi described in the The Flood twice - with Doug in 2019 and with Matt in 2021, so I have heard the story twice. When I went looking for the website I couldn't find it, so it was great to actually read the story.

Tripping canoe in class III rapids

You're right - it's a Dagger Legend. The Dagger logo is pretty easy to to see, but I never would have gotten the Legend. I zoomed in to 400%, and that is the logo. You have good eyes for boats. I wouldn't recommend it anyway. Not sure I will do it again. The carry down is terrible (especially...

Tripping canoe in class III rapids

Once I saw the guy on the paddle board go through I knew the line I was going to take. I figured if he could run it standing on a paddle board then I should be able to run it kneeling in a canoe. I got through fine.

Tripping canoe in class III rapids

You don't see this very often - a tripping canoe running the class III section below the Ball Mountain Dam on the West River in VT. This (father/son?) team made it look easy. They took the far right line through some pretty big waves - that's the way the raft guides go. Kid in the bow does...

What is your least favorite portage?

The road washed out in 2020, and they haven't repaired it, so there hasn't been a shuttle from the park since then. The shuttle was great - could do 3 or 4 runs a day, and din't have to deal with the dam Waiting for the shuttle in 2019 in Jamaica State Park. The shuttle truck for boats in...

What is your least favorite portage?

This one is definitely on my list - down the backside of the Ball Mountain Dam on the West River in VT. It is not particularly long (little over half a mile), but the rocky path zig-zags 247-feet down to the river - that's about 22 stories. I used my cart to get my canoe to the bottom...

    Gear for technique improvement

I have lots of paddles that lean against the foundation in my basement and collect dust, but I have three that I use all the time. I paddle dedicated solo boats, and my "go-to" paddle is a Werner Bandit. With a “T” grip and spooned blade it’s great for “cab forward” paddling – forward and...

    Prospector in Whitewater/Ollie Sandeman Video

Wow - that first video is pretty amazing. Some big leans up and out over the gunwales to pull that boat around. My usual response to paddling whitewater solo in a big tandem is "why?" He does it with style. Not sure which is more impressive - this guy or the kid in the Waterwalker movie...

Bent vs. Straight Shaft Paddles—A Jacobson vs. Callan Debate

I have a Spirit II with bucket seats and foot braces that I paddle sit-and-switch with a bent shaft. All my other boats have high bench seats, so I paddle them kneeling (or sitting) with a straight shaft. For me, the paddle depends how the boat is set up.

The Tangerine Dream arrived early! (New Hemlock SRT)

That video got around - saw it on Paddling.com. Any chance you will get the boat back. Is it repairable?
