Canoe Art: Paintings, Sketches, Sculpture, Architecture

"Trade Route" 38x56 inches, hand sewn beadwork I finished this piece in 2021. Instead of beading the water as water, I filled it with reports, charts and data about the Yakima River (Eastern Washington). The title refers to the trading of salmon spawning grounds for irrigation. The Yakima is...

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

Good topic. I started mountain climbing as a teenager, and those pre-cellphone/radio experiences definitely color my thinking. Later, I did a lot of back country solo mountain biking in the Cascades, which weren't overnight trips, unless you broke yourself. Those rides were no-fall rides...20...

Electrical device you are most likely and least likely to eliminate

I have a wrist watch, a camera and a headlamp. My phone is off and stashed in a waterproof case. I learned pretty quick that computing stuff and GPS just takes my head out of the place that I want to be. So, I'm least likely to give up the wristwatch, and I've already dumped the GPS.

    Paddling in a lightning storm

I always think, "path of least resistance". Get to shore or close to shore. Be lower than the surroundings. Don't stand next to the neighborhood "lightning rod." Under trees is good, but the tallest tree in the forest is bad. Don't lean up against or touch the metal fence. If there are...

    Photo of the day

Okay, it's a photo of my artwork, but it's canoe artwork. Title - "Trade Route" 38x55 inches, hand-sewn beadwork. Self portrait on the Yakima River in 2010, just above the Yakima Canyon. Instead of beading the water surface, I beaded text, maps and charts from reports about the river (yes...

Wood paddles - which style and maker do you like?

I make my own, hand carved out of one, sometimes 2 pieces of wood (side scraps glued together). straight shaft, oil finish My favorites for solo are wide beavertails. I like the fat part of the blade in the water for the j-stroke. My current paddle is spanish cedar (cigar box wood). Stable...

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

The most dangerous thing on a New England canoe trip would be a person carrying a gun because they were afraid of bears.

What is your local day paddle?

I'm in Milford, CT. Lower section of the Housatonic and the Wheeler Marsh are just on the other side of town. East River in Guilford is one of the best day trip paddles around - salt marsh, fresh water marsh and forest in 4-1/2 miles. Lake Lillinonah, I especially like the Shephaug side...few...
