    A Raven for Christmas

Yes I did this time. I think it helped? That roll of fibered strapping tape was 6 bucks! Good grief. I'm sure I'll find other uses for the rest of it. I'll probably have to use the rest for redoing my stems. Roy

    A Raven for Christmas

I remember reading your post when you built yours. Yep maybe your fault Mem. I figured if you could do it, I could too. Ha Well it'll work out. I had my strips a little on the heavy side of 1/8 thick, maybe more like 3/16? My quality of wood selection probably could've been better. I just...

    A Raven for Christmas

Um no I didn't. It was strapping tape, but not fiber reinforced. That probably contributed to my failure. Hmm I guess I better get some. The store room at work doesn't stock the good strapping tape, bunch of cheap skates. I guess I'll have to spend my own money on that.

    A Raven for Christmas

You mean something like that? When finished a person would view the ends with horizontal lines across the stems. 🤔 Interesting. I know I had quiet a bit of spring back when stems were left unclamped for a few minutes. I went and clamped them back up figuring maybe the needed longer curing time.

    A Raven for Christmas

Yes it does has tapered stems. My strips are 1 3/4" wide. I remember reading that and forgot it. Thanks for the reminder Rick. I unclamped it to check everything over. Eh don't know? The outer strip on the inner stem did crack at the bend. I think it'll clean up fine and be structurally sound...

    A Raven for Christmas

I'll try that when I do my bow stem. I came close to deck area of the stem. That would be bad to be short there

    A Raven for Christmas

I considered that. I did my first one and it was a lot easier. But I thought I'd take the plunge with this one. I can only assume it's true to the original designers intention.

    A Raven for Christmas

Thanks Gamma. I heard it crack, but it was just a little on the edge so I thought I could work around it. A minute later I heard a louder crack and then I figured there was no way around it then. That's a sharp bend in that spot. I'd say soaking the strips probably had a huge benefit. You...

    A Raven for Christmas

Making my stems using the Nick Schade method. Smeared a good 6oz of glue in-between each strip before taping and wrapping. Next time I'll have at least a full 16oz bottle before I start.Slow and steady.Aaah! Oh no! In for a penny in for a pound. So I removed my glue stack of strips, cut wrap...

Well, 2 months later and I'm getting back at it. Is 3/4 mdf ok to use fo my stem forms? Roy

    Glad to be aboard

Welcome from east Tn MM. I've been a beginner for about 20 years now. I hang out here because these people seem like a great bunch. I'm sure you'll like it here on this site, and hopefully what TN has to offer for canoeing. Roy

    Thwart width

If you still have the original seats, and how they mount, I would install them first. The after the seats are mounted, I would cut the thwart to fit. I wouldn't stress the width of the hull in any direction. Just my thoughts. Roy

    My Wabnaki

Oh Wow! It looks great on the inside. I did the same one, a few years back, and yes it snap crackled and popped a little. I made a temporary make shift center thwart because I got worried about any possible damage that I may cause when scraping and sanding the inside. Glad to see your back at...

    (Finally) starting from scratch.

What Jim just said. Yes an old compressor tank is a time bomb. The explosion blew all the windows out in my basement. Shook some picture frames off the walls upstairs and some of my wife's porcelain animals fell off shelves. Your canoe is looking great. That canoe may end up being your favorite...

Proper blade for cutting your own strips for stripper canoe?

I used a circular saw with a thin-kerf blade the cut removes about a 1/16th of an inch I have also used my old table saw that uses a 10" blade and it wastes about 3/32 of an inch The top scale of the calipers reads inches, the bottom is metric. I use the Freud Diablo saw blades. Roy

    (Finally) starting from scratch.

It just seems like if a person doesn't run a screw in properly, or maybe splits part of the gunnel when tightening the screw, or any other damage a misplaced screw mistake can cause, it would require repairing the damage that you have just created. Epoxying the gunnels on allowed me to slide...

    (Finally) starting from scratch.

I agree with Jim Dodd. I epoxied my gunnels on. No screws and no drilling holes. I figured I would have to clamp the gunnels on either way whether I used screws or epoxied them. Epoxying them on seemed like it would be more solid. But I'm no expert cause that was the only one I've built, so far...

    (Finally) starting from scratch.

That white Aspen is pretty. I like the cherry accent strips. I wouldn't haphazardly try to beat the chunk of wood off. You might crack the hull. Maybe shave it away with a sharp chisel. Your build is looking great. Roy
