    A Raven from Scratch

The plans for the Raven I built didn't make any mention of being stemless. It discussed one or 2 piece stems I went with the 2 piece stems because it was what, I assume, the true design of J Winters. And it was interesting to do. Enjoying following along. Roy

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

I have very little experience with kayaks. I've been in a white water kayak for 10 minutes, and I have never been on a SOT. Nothing against them, but not my preference. I like how a canoe sits, the openness and the carrying capacity. I can easily enter and exit a canoe without getting my...

    A Raven from Scratch

Glad your back at it. I decided to take a year or two off from building another. I've never used a shaper, so I don't know anything about them. After cutting my strips out of the rough lumber, I ran them through my table saw before routing the bead. The router setup couldn't handle that much...

    How Bad Is My Paddling?

I've watched with amazement people doing the fancy strokes and freestyle canoeing. It looks like fun. I'm still a young 60, in 4 months, so I should be able to learn. The paddle I was using is 59". That might be a little long for me, maybe if I include my waist size it might be the right...

    How Bad Is My Paddling?

Yep. I had a feeling I wasn't doing it right. I've done the goon stroke for about 30 years. Never knew any better.

    How Bad Is My Paddling?

Ugh.. oh well, I'll be working on it. It's fun being out there. The weather here is usually pretty mild. We are having normal early winter weather right now. Frosty and 30F this morning and going to be 60 later. I'll have some nice days this winter, so I can get out and play.

    A "Tail" of Two Otters?

I made a couple of beaver tail paddles, a few months ago. I thought they were more work on me moving them through the water, so I cut one down similar to an Otter tail shape. It is much easier and pleasing to paddle with, and is just as efficient. I'm going to cut the one on the right down to a...

    Motorized Canoes

My first run at canoeing with an out board. It was a Coleman RamX made by pelican with A 2hp Johnson. I made a mount the mount for it. To noisy.

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

Is that the same canvas canoe you've used in a lot of your videos? I love the truck also.

    How Bad Is My Paddling?

Great advice, thank you all. We may take the tandom canoe out tomorrow. We rode bicycles today and put in 20 miles, so if my paddling partner is up and rearing to go in the morning, we'll take it out. I'll work on it. Roy

    How Bad Is My Paddling?

I was curious how bad my paddle strokes are. I was out on my local waters trying out my new paddle. Eh, I should've made my paddle a little narrower. Anyhow I thought I'd try to record my paddle strokes, maybe for a funny video, or if I'm lucky enough someone may say that it isn't so bad. I do...

    Solo - fears and boredom

I used to enjoy sitting by a nice fire, smoking a good cigar and enjoying some coffee. Now that I've quit smoking..... Well now I just sit and enjoy my coffee while listening to the night creatures. I miss my cigars. Roy

Waterproof case that holds phone and wallet?

Here's a picture from local river that I was on last week. I made the thwart bag several years ago. The patches are seen on. The bag zipper under is the flap. I cut a plastic cutting board and put it in the bottom of the bag so it's wider and maintained it's shape. The bag is heavy canvas.

Waterproof case that holds phone and wallet?

I always put my wallet and keys in a good quality ziplock baggie, and put it in my thwart bag It's not really water proof, but it is water resistant. It would take on heck of a beating to loose it or it's contents. I take it every time I go out with any of the canoes. I use my cell phone for...

    Hello from Mechanicsville, Virginia

Hello and welcome Doogie, yes like UCanoe_2 said. Starting out with a good used canoe is a great way to figure out what you like while saving some bucks. And Appomattox River Company is only an hour and half from you. It's fun to go drool, slobber and cry on some nice expensive new canoes. I do...

What U.S. or Canadian documentation do you need to cross into the other country and back?

I wondered this also. A quick Google search was helpful, but still leaves me with questions. I've had all kinds of misleading information, well meaning of course, but I would definitely get a passport just in case. There's lot more to read on this. I'm need to study up on it in case I...
