    Dreaded Cancer, Mark III

Prayers and best wishes, Gerald. I'm going to save this and show it to my urologist, if necessary, if he starts spouting off about "you're too old" for PSA screening.

NW CT Flatwater Day Trip 1, Sunday 8/31/25

Al, this trip takes about 45 minutes with a bent shaft paddle. Otherwise, it takes as long as the slowest geezer paddles, which could be me. Probably five hours at a leisurely pace with a 30-40 minute lunch break at Roxbury Falls, which is the turnaround point.

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

It's not exactly a newsflash that lots of folks can be crappy at a sport even when they use the best equipment. The issue is whether bent shaft paddles are more efficient for forward stroking than straights. More "efficient" means, to me, that the very same person when FORWARD STROKING : (1)...

    Article: "Freestyle kept me paddling"

"In 2017 I was struggling to stay interested in canoeing. A few years earlier I had sold my canoes and then in 2016 had purchased a couple of Pack Boats which I soon realized didn’t suit how I wanted to paddle. I wasn’t sure what I wanted but knew it didn’t include a double bladed paddle or...

    Canoe ID and restoration

Great job, @Dana. The Mad River Explorer in Royelex was my first canoe and I did everything in it: solo, tandem, lakes, whitewater, poling, small outboard motor, and even made a rowing rig.

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

Here is the entire full text of the 2009 Caplan study, which concluded: ". . . the fastest boat velocity was achieved by ensuring that the face of the paddle was vertical at the point in the stroke when the paddler had accelerated the paddle to the greatest extent through the water." (Emphasis...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

Sumac, a famously native tree of Iran, has been infesting Gamma's boat building brain for more than six years now: https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/alternatives-to-cedar.96606/ Time to queue back some sumac and glue/tack.

Back to the crater (this time for real?) Manicouagan Reservoir

I can see all his tracks and his stoppage as of 7:12 pm today. He's a little more than half way around.

My trip to Canada in a Cyber truck

I had to do a search to find out what a Cyber truck is. I'm not sure what the issue is with them (other than profound ugliness), but please don't bother explaining to me because I suspect it involves something political or media distorted/hyped. Not of interest to me, and not allowed here. I...

It doesn't sound as if the problem is with our site software, Xenforo. Perhaps your computer or your version of Windows or your version of Firefox are out of date.

Those shortcuts work for me in Firefox on my PC but not in Chrome or Opera. However, I have End and Home buttons on my PC keyboard, which will instantly take me to the top or bottom of a page. Also, I have PgUp and PgDn buttons on my keyboard, which will scroll me more slowly up and down...

    Square Stern race

Mem's OP motivated me to see if I could directly embed a Facebook video. All I did was copy the URL from the address bar of the Facebook page having the video, and then pasting that URL into the Reply text entry box (after, as always, a line space after any prefatory reply text).

While the page-up and page-down buttons appear on my ThinkPad Windows PC, the shortcuts Cntrl+UpArrow and Cntrl+DownArrow also work.

Kahel, I use Firefox almost exclusively and the buttons are there in all color themes. Same for the Chrome and Opera browsers. Try switching among default dark, default light and default system, and refresh the page after every switch.

The page-up and page-down jump buttons (with an arrow inside) may have been implemented differently in the several different color styles (themes) we have available on the site. I have just adjusted my control program to make sure that both the page-up AND page-down jump buttons appear in the...

Roll Call for West CT, SW MA and MHV NY Canoeists

I appreciate the positive responses. I know @Brightraven works on Saturdays and I assume others might work on Mondays, so Sundays may be the the best day. Because I'm probably going to be out of town in late September and early October, I don't want to waste time planning. So, I'm going to...

NW CT Flatwater Day Trip 1, Sunday 8/31/25

I will be paddling this Sunday, August 31, on a 9.5 mile round trip out of the Lake Lillinonah Pond Brook boat launch, which is at 158 Hanover Road, Newtown, Connecticut. I know there is water there, all flat water, and the weather is supposed to be good. The trip goes down Pond Brook Stream...
