    Got me a DOUG SPECIAL!

Yessir, a Wenonah Spirit II, in (I think) the Aramid Layup. I included the serial number below if anyone knows anything about Wenonahs. Nice boat, but it looks like it's been wrapped a half dozen times. I got it for... not a case of beer and $100, not a case of beer, not even the backwash off...

Group Meals in Camp: Yes, No, Bleh?

What I like about group meals is that I'm good at keeping the weight down. For instance, my tostadas: mini tortillas, turkey sausage (dried), refried beans (bought online dried), salsa (dried), chopped roma tomatoes (they keep the longest), chopped avocado (also surprising how long they keep)...

So, what old item do you still use?

Mostly my kevlar tripping canoes from the 70's. I've worn out and replaced most everything else, but I can rebuild a canoe over and over.

What could possibly go wrong. Actually this is my current rig:

How many pairs of footwear: in canoe vs. on portage vs. in camp?

I'd like to hear what you get. Last summer I waded a mile up a stream filled with large round slime-covered boulders and had to place each foot carefully, heave the boat, then find a new footing. It was exhausting. I've thought about the wading shoes with better underwater traction, just not...

Group Meals in Camp: Yes, No, Bleh?

I was just about to start a thread on this subject. I have three trips coming up this season. The first is 4 of us on the Miramichi, where there will be coolers involved - two for beer and one large sized Meat Locker. Menus are a loose affair and sometimes we have to play the Missing Label...

Poll: What do you sleep on mostly when canoe camping?

I'm on my 4th inflatable. First Exped and the valve failed. I returned it for a new and saw they replaced the valve with a burp valve. Eventually the glued seam between the air pockets failed, resulting in a big double-wide air bubble. The third was also an Exped, also failed in the same way...

Pakcanoe 165 roll-able. Looking at buying one for NFCT.

“I was a little dismayed by all the vehicular intervention. Not sure I'd do it (partly for the cost). There will be bony miles. “ Me and a bud started at Flagstaff Lake and ended at Chesuncook Village a couple of years ago. We poled up all the upstream sections, boat-carted where we could...

    Prescription Drug Discount Plans

I have checked out Mark Cuban's plan and it does seem to be quite cheap. I don't take any prescriptions though so I haven't taken advantage of it. The big thing is that you have to get a written prescription rather than have them call it in to your pharmacy, which they do by default without...

    What's your Portage Pace?

I recall reading a scientific study about physiology and human pace. There is an efficient walking pace and an efficient running pace. We all have different ones, similar to hull-speed. But they also found another efficient pace, between the two, sort of a rolling semi-jog, and couldn't...

    Why Are You Here?

Dunno when I found it, but I come here for some intelligent discussion and insight.

    What's your best dehydrated meal?

The secret to drying chicken is to start with canned chicken. That's because it's cooked in a pressure cooker which somehow keeps it porous while it dries. Cauliflower Curry (see hurrythefoodup.com) has protein and is very tasty. Also add that chicken if you want. The simplest, of course, is to...

    Airtravel with PakCanoe

I wasn't directly involved in the shipping but my group found it cheaper to mail it. Of course you need someone like an outfitter to receive it. And if it's going to a Canadian destination, it's best to drive over the border, go through customs personally, then ship it.

Carry Brook to the Aroostook River, Northern Maine

Me and Doug Doremus had great plans to ascend La Pomkeag and Carry Brook to Grand Lake Sebois once upon a very long time ago. It was mid June and the Aroostook was already drying up. Met an old-timer on the river and he laughed so hard he nearly split in two. "You'll be dragging your boats...

    The Millinocket Carry, Northern Maine

So many comments I want to respond to. Thanks, Goonstroke for this thread. Fannie May Eckstorm describes the "Dobsy Carry" along Rand Brook, leaving it where it bends sharply north (actually it describes the carry starting directly from Passadumkeag, so it's probably a seasonal thing there)...

    Paddle transport cart

After many experiments, I remove my painters, tie to the grab handles at each end of the boat and tie with a trucker's hitch to the four corners of the cart. Five or six miles fully loaded on a logging road like this and very little shifting.

    Solo - fears and boredom

My wife has a rule against my paddling solo, but once in a while I get an exception. I love it! So much more time for my journaling and photography (lame as it is). I also know that "can't find anyone to go" syndrome and that's tough. If that's the problem, join some groups. Canadian Canoe...

    Paddle transport cart

Yup, I bought a Canadian Boat Walker about 25 years ago and have put many miles on it. The design is tried and true, basically the same as the Suspenz. I have flirted with other designs mostly because 16 pounds is a ridiculous amount of weight for a single purpose gizmo. Still searching...

Video: 13,000 Years of Native Penobscot River Canoeing

Great video. I've always been impressed with the stewardship the Penobscot Nation shows for their river.

Vehicle vandalism while in the wilderness

Common sense precautions is all. So far I've lost a pair of binoculars, a carabiner, and saved a million hours of worry.
