    Physical Canoeing Resolutions

I don't believe in any of those yearly resolutions, however, I do stay fit and active, with some exceptions, all year, every year. I have always said most people spend the first half of their lives ignoring their health, and the second half reminded of it. As BF says upthread, it's much easier...

Carbon composite canoe build help and advice please

Sure thing, it’s my duty to share my limited knowledge and experience with all that tolerate it!! Depending on your location, there may be more than just virtual support.

Carbon composite canoe build help and advice please

I think you’ll have a challenge to replicate that external molded keel. That section will surely add some stiffness to the hull, but you may be surprised at how local that stiffening might be. Keep your carbon on the inside, where its tensile strength is best suited. Definitely keep the stems...

    Ely marathon

That full marathon is just nuts! And I wonder if the Ausable race had a staggered start. Also surprised that there weren’t more collisions and swampings. Even in my younger years, I never cared for that sort of paddling

Since you built a stripped kayak, I’m sure you’ll do a fine job along the keel on this hull. I don’t recall if you had a target weight in mind, or is that not a concern. Wait, you’re a bigger guy, and I suppose 5 lbs one way or the other won’t really matter. Aged welterweights like me have to...

Stem looks quite nice as it is…does it really need another piece laminated on top? And what about decks and bulkheads? Open stems? You seem to have a pretty specific aesthetic in mind already. IIRC, you’re planning on aluminum gunwales

Those accent strips are gonna look great, and blend well to your stems. When I paddled my first strip built canoe (1978!) I expected it would be a cool head trip. What I didn’t expect was all the questions and comments. I could have made cue card responses, the questions were so consistent...

Mike, You're sure moving right along... I can't quite tell from your pics how that accent strip works relative to the crease. When I strip built my Kite (2014, had to look back at mt photos) I followed the build guidelines. Specifically, I stripped the crease, extending up beyond where the hull...

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Let’s see…been riding motorcycles since I was 14 years old, currently riding a beefed up Triumph Bonneville Special Edition. I’ve been a fitness bicyclist since 1983, currently riding a full Ti frame Centurian that I built. Frame was a $650 bargain around 2001, several component and wheelsets...

    Eagle Eats Great Blue Heron

Wow!! I never thought that herons would make a good meal, they’re kinda scrawny… There’s a small lake near me that I sometimes paddle to see the expansive heron rookery, but the last time I visited, the rookery was abandoned. After discussions with one of my bird watching friends, I learned that...

Hey Mike, Glad to see you’re starting your stretched Kite build. The builder guide that comes with the plans gives excellent directions WRT where to start stripping. That “crease” is actually quite easy to strip, but, as Mr. dog brain above warns, be sure to NOT maintain a sharp edge on the...

Hello to all from Upstate NY

Welcome, John I suppose you paddle in the ADK’s a lot. Do you have any favorite spots? Places on the list that you haven’t got to yet? Any more pics, maybe from some ADK paddling?

Doing non-racing things with a racing boat?

I looked at the specs for that V1-A Jensen...I didn't see any cross section views, but if it's designed to fit the USCA cruiser standard, I have lots of experience in USCA Competition Cruisers. I built several strippers as Comp Cruisers. Never raced them, but tripped with them for many years. I...

Bent vs. straight paddle - direct comparison plus bonus footage

I too continue to enjoy these discussions. I have noticed that although paddle velocity and angle have been talked about, there seems to be no mention of the vertical component of the paddle forces. A straight blade paddle pulls the hull DOWN into the water with the rear half of every stroke...

    Out and Back Overnights

I was reluctant to recommend upstate NY… but since snapper broke the ice, I may as well. Move on up here, capital district where I live has every modern convenience without excessive crowds or traffic. Plenty of high paying work too, if you’re still doing that kinda thing. I’m 40 minutes away...

New To Canoe, But Not To Paddling

Home built hulls can be built as tough or as light as you may desire. Selective placement of Dynel will nearly eliminate any accumulated abrasive wear. AFIK, no commercial hulls use Dynel in their layups. I regularly abuse my hulls, beaver drags, beach launching/landing, unsupported loading...

Comparing speed and efficiency of single vs. double blade paddle

Alan, Very, very interesting... Heart rate seems the best way to compare for sure, I'm a cyclist and heart rate is the easiest way to track performance for sure. I do wonder how much energy is wasted by the yaw from the double blade. If only you could also track your course for both paddle...

New To Canoe, But Not To Paddling

Just for reference, dried cypress is 32 lb/cu ft, western red cedar is 22 lb/cu ft. An average solo canoe has roughly one cu ft of wood in it, so a cypress hull wouldn’t be too much of a penalty, weight-wise.
