    Winter Accessories

I love snowshoeing! It can be pretty low key if it's not too cold and I'm out in gentle terrain, but I wear/bring technical clothing if it's really cold, and/or I'm up in the mountains, and/or quite a ways from a road, where an injury might keep me out in the cold for a while, even overnight...

New canoe speed record for Wisconsin River

I respect someone that paddles the length of a river system, as I do for someone that hikes the length of a trail system, or bicycles across the continent. But when a journey becomes a race to see how fast you can do it, the journey changes into something else. A great canoeist is a great...

New canoe speed record for Wisconsin River

I have the same impression of all FKT endeavors: It's not a race in the normal sense, that is, against real-time competitors. It's a class within a class I suppose so I'll leave it at that.

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

I use an alcohol stove (Minibull Bongo) and prefer denatured ethanol alcohol. It's easy to find, inexpensive, relatively less toxic, somewhat more efficient, and doesn't seem to smoke as much as Heet (yellow bottle). Added: The red bottle Heet is pretty much worthless as a stove fuel.

Good for him. Not my idea of what canoeing is about, but good for him.

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

I'm a single-blade canoeist because I like the advantages of an open boat and the control of a single-blade; that's in context of flat water and quick water paddling. I've paddled sea kayaks on lakes and reservoirs and they were a lot of fun but in comparison with a canoe they weren't as...

    Flotation Chambers

Hi, Nick, Yup, that's what I was referring to in my post (below). I usually have tie-down patches and lashing straps in my canoes but have gotten lazy about getting them installed. This Prospector 13 will motivate me to get it done. "Now get to work!" :)

    Flotation Chambers

Speaking of flotation chambers... :-) We have a Swift Prospector 13 that we had built without flotation chambers, mainly because I don't like having to think about installing/removing the tank plug. (According to Swift's owner's manual you have to make sure the plug is removed during transport...

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

I guess it did come across that way so I edited my post. Not that drunkenness was the reason for the gathering but evening fires did tend to mimic cocktail hours in the woods.

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

I'm in the "matured" camp I guess. In years pasts, fires were more of a centerpiece for social gatherings (including drinking in the woods) than they are now. Not that getting drunk around a fire was the focus, but social drinking was typically part of the gathering. Nowadays I and most of the...

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

I have to agree with Clemency. I've been hunting and target shooting since I was a kid, as have many of my friends and family and very few of us feel so threatened that we carry on a regular basis. Maybe it depends on where you live and the places you visit. I'm thankful that I don't live in...

    Curtis Nomad dream realized

Contact Hemlock Canoe, they should have both styles of decal. Or know if Dave has some available. Contact Hemlock Canoe

    Curtis Nomad dream realized

I saw it over at Dave's this fall. That's a great canoe in great condition for a very reasonable price and I'm surprised it hadn't sold before now. Those early Curtis laminations weigh a bit more but are durable builds. Looks like there aren't any decals - you can get a couple of "Curtis" decals...

    Favorite camp chair

My wife and I had been using Crazy Creek "chairs" for years. They're light weight and versatile, but you end up on the ground if there isn't a log or rock or something to set them on. Not a big deal but we're getting older and getting up off the ground isn't as easy as it once was. Plus, our...

    Barbless hooks

There are more and more "trophy" streams and lakes that require single barbless hooks. That makes sense if people are going to be catching and releasing fish. If I was meat fishing in waters that allowed barbed treble hooks, that's what I'd use.

    Barbless hooks

I not only pinch the barbs down on all my hooks but I clip off two of the three hooks on a treble hook. It helps to minimize the damage inflicted to a fish's jaw, throat, and especially gills. I don't mind losing a good fish now and then because of it.

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

eckilson - The examples you provided has convinced me to give Photoshop Elements another try. I've used Picture Window Pro to make corrections (cropping, color balance, brightness, saturation, contrast, etc) for so long that it's become routine. But getting rid of unwanted objects takes time; it...

Beyond phones, what photo and video equipment for canoe trips?

Interesting. I had a much older version of Photoshop Elements (before AI corrections were available) and much preferred a program called Picture Window Pro, now available as freeware with a suggested $25 donation from Digital Light & Color. https://www.dl-c.com/Downloads.html What caught my...
