Cold handle frying pans, they’re still out there.

It was a mixture of canned corned beef hash and dehydrated scrambled eggs & cheese. The biscuits were also tasty, but I only got to eat two out of the five I made. An unknown critter snagged the remaining three, which I had left out to cool, but left them unguarded while I spent a few minutes...

Cold handle frying pans, they’re still out there.

Even food that doesn't look all that appealing tastes great when cooked in my Cold Handle pan. 😊

Wooly Bear Caterpillar Predicts Winter (?)

Winter cold must be coming soon. I have seen an uptick in the number of wooly bear caterpillars seeking refuge in my barn this week. I even found one curled up in my Old Town Guide safely tucked away for the winter in the barn. It is interesting how they will just curl up in seemingly...

Wooly Bear Caterpillar Predicts Winter (?)

My wife, a full professor in entomology, says there is no scientific literature to support this old folk tale. The National Weather Service has an interesting and informative web page on the subject. https://www.weather.gov/arx/woollybear

    Panther to Snowtrekker Winter Tent

I have the Shakelton 8' X 8' removable floor model from Ellis Canvas Tents. I would not consider it a lightweight tent. The packed weight with the poles and stakes (minus the removable floor) is around 37 pounds. It packs down to the size of a medium duffle bag, approximately 14" X 12" X 35"...

Photos of Animals, Fish, Birds & Bugs on a Canoe Trip

Brook trout caught on a caddis imitation as far as I could paddle my canoe up Hay Brook, a tributary of Grand Lake Matagamon in Baxter State Park, Maine. I caught it on September 30, 2023, the last day of Maine's north zone open water fishing season. This brook trout was also caught on a...

Poll: How often do your canoe trips include fishing?

I enjoy fishing as much as paddling a canoe, so combining the two activities is the best of both worlds. I probably bring my fishing gear 90% of the time when doing a day or evening paddle on a local water near my home in Massachusetts. On my paddling and camping excursions to backcountry...

    Swift canoes demo day

I have purchased two canoes and other canoe gear from White Rose and have had a very positive experience dealing with them. Keith is upfront and honest, as well as very knowledgeable and very pleasant to work with. I would buy from them again.

Thank you, Robin. It is a great canoe, and my first wood canvas one. Over the years, I have had the good fortune and pleasure to paddle many different aluminum, polyethylene, kevlar, and carbon fiber canoes. Paddling this Old Town Guide is intangibly different. It is so smooth, quiet, and...

My first test paddle in my recently acquired 16' Old Town Guide. It paddled as nicely as it looks.

Maine Canoe Symposium June 3-4, 2023

I also attended the MCS this year for the first time. Despite the dismal weather, for the reasons so well articulated above by goonstroke and RickR, I thought it was a wonderful event. The plus side of the less-than-perfect weather was it kept the mosquitoes and black flies at bay. I enjoyed...

    Wildfires in Canada!

Photos from Baltimore taken by my son this morning. He has not been able run the past few day due to air quality. Where I am located in north central Massachusetts it hazy but othewise not too bad this morning. The acrid smell of burning wood is not evident so far today.

    An old neighbors ax

Well done, Robin. Seeing artifacts like old axe heads begin a new life is fantastic. Here is an interesting video by a fellow Mainer, Joe Holland, on restoring old axe heads recovered from an Allagash area logging camp.
