    What are you reading?

I had to fly to SoCal last week which gave me a chance to read "Storied Lands & Waters of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway" by Bruce Jacobson. The book tells the stories of the AWW, inventorying the assets that are in the Waterway, talks about how to improve those assets, and designs future...

    Lost (misplaced) a tool

What day is it? I spend time almost daily looking for something I put down. The other day I was trying to sharpen a Forstner Bit and I'll be dipped if I could find my small DMT Diamond sticks. I looked almost everywhere. I ordered another set. My wife asked what I was looking for. 'What do I...

What could you leave at home?

I do pack some comfort items that could be left at home, but my biggest problem, still, is packing more food than I need. I think trip planning is just as important. I will always double carry, just won't push as far.

What was the first river you ever paddled?

Allagash. My cousin tried for years to get us to go. He grew up in St John overlooking the St John looking into Canada and across the street from Norman L'Italien. He and his father spent a summer at Michaud Farm. At a family reunion, he pitched it one more time. We had 15 cousins that wanted...

    Solitude isn't for everyone

I love paddling alone. I go with my sons a couple'ah, three times a year, but there is nothing like being alone in the woods on a well laid out easy trip. No real schedule, just time alone.

Leave No Trace pledge to pick up trash

I was shocked the first time I went to Algonquin at the amount of trash there. The only clean place I found in the park was a loop I did that was deep in the NW corner of the park. I have never seen anything like it paddling in the ADK, Maine, or hiking in the Whites even in the '60s before the...
