The article states they were in shallow water and paddled over (presumably unintentionally) a 10 foot gator, which then thrashed capsizing the canoe. In this case, the gator almost surely was startled awake and/or interpreted the canoe as an attack. Florida John is correct; it is mating season...

I’ve taken that train ride twice and don’t remember it being particularly onerous.

When I took some solo whitewater lessons from Jimmy Yocum at Nantahala, he made me swamp the canoe and get it to shore before he did anything else with me.

Cree River part 12. We last saw me standing in cold water, wet to the skin and cold to the bone. And it is raining. My assessment is that my brain is still working rationally, that I should not try to paddle further that day, that I should make camp and get warm. I tied the canoe up securely...

Looking forward to hearing about it. As recped already knows, I've paddled the first part of that river twice some 30 years ago and am really interested to see what it looks like now (ie. more roads and logging apparent in google earth.) Have a great trip!

Canoe Markets When I was in the "back country" in Costa Rica, there were lots of canoes traveling up and down the river, carrying bananas to market, people going from villages into town. There was even a canoe that just ferried back and forth over the river for the people who walked the trails...

I took a rafting trip in Costa Rica. The river was in flood stage, so the upper stretch was bypassed. I did put my faith in the company and guide. We all survived, but I noticed the guide was looking stressed out trying to manage the class IVs. I. Probably would not do that again.
