Monster Icebergs: Don't put in at Innaarsuit, Greenland

It would be quite disconcerting to have one of those hanging out near one’s house. Here is a time lapse to get some idea of the movement. 30 sec iceberg

If you could take one boat on a Western road trip...

If I were unsure of plans and rivers, I’d probably take my Mohawk solo 13’ in Royalex. It is sturdy and handles good enough in most situations. It’s banged up enough that no one would steal it.

Flash flood video from Center Point Texas

Death toll 111 so far. 170 still missing. No survivors have been found since last Friday. If one looks at the expense of this recovery phase, I suspect it would pay for those warning sirens many times over. Cellular coverage and internet and radio are spotty in this area, apparently.

Flash flood video from Center Point Texas

The current death toll is over 100 people. And I can’t believe how long they waited to close that bridge down. (First video)

Flash flood video from Center Point Texas

This morning the news said the river rose 25 feet in 45 minutes. Many of these Western rivers can behave this way. It may not even be raining where you are paddling. Rain upstream can cause flash floods.

    Missinaibi River

If you have the receipt for your US purchase of your canoe, it would be a good idea to take it with you.

    The ice hook

A light weight verson looks like an excellent tool for retrieving a hat that has blown off one’s head before it sinks.

    PIctures of celebrities in canoes

I've never heard of her either, but then I don't know most of the celebrities of this era. If one gets on the news, I have to look it up to see who they are.

Rescue on the Franklin River, Tasmania

What impressed me was exactly the same phrase you quote above. I no longer rock hop either. But the point it drove home to me was that simple ordinary things one does all the time, can result in major injury in the wilderness. I broke my ankle a few years ago just going outside the back door...

Show pictures of your tent(s) on a canoe trip

Found these actual paper photos while cleaning out some shelves. This is the first tent I had that I really liked. I think it was made by The North Face, but I don’t remember for sure. I had it for over 30 years and it was starting to be unreliable. It has not been made in many, many years. I...

I just used this provider. It was relatively easy and I could see the river and lakes , etc clearly.

Food fads and contradictory dietary advice/studies

I once ate everything I could get my hands on a 28 day canoe trip, from fried fish to chocolate bars, and lost five pounds.

    My new pack basket

That pack basket is a real find, especially if as you say, it is made of pounded ash. It certainly looks pounded and I don’t see any nails. Just an ash binding at the top. Amazing.

    Source for Canadian Maps

I just placed an order with GoTrekkers. I found their website a bit mystifying but finally got it. Their mailing address is Laronge and their office to pick up maps is in Missinipe. I could have stopped at both had I known when I did the Cree.

Solid wood inserts for old webbed seat

Don’t they hold water/damp for a long time once rained on? I’m thinking multi-day trips when there’s not much chance to dry out.

Rescue on the Franklin River, Tasmania

This a from a whitewater raft journey, but the accident is one any of us could have anywhere. [And incidentally, this Franklin River is named for our very own John Franklin who died looking for the NorthWest Passage. He was for a time the governor of Tasmania.] While boulder-hopping, the...

    Camping with no tent, hammock

One of the most marvelous sensations was using no tent, no tarp, no bug protection. Just lie down in your sleeping bag any where you want and gaze at the brilliant stars until you fall asleep. Joshua Tree National Park.
