    Gonna Need a Bigger Boat

I actually did solo a tandem. I’m pretty sold on solos in the 14-16’ lengths. I took the plunge. When the guy said he would deliver for $99, I had to do it. Delivery in a couple weeks. I was on their way to a SC shop delivery. Bought a NW Solo for my dog. Carbon fiber trim, foot brace...

    Solo Canoe Search Beginning

Gurmpus, I agree about that he Gelcoat. More of a lake coating. The cracks are guarantee with rocks and fast water. I’ll be interested in seeing that uncoated layup.

    Gonna Need a Bigger Boat

I have consistently overloaded my canoe on trips. I can no longer handle the weight of my kit and dog too. The magic just isn’t big enough. Looking at a Northwind solo or another Prism. Haven’t found one, seeking other options. Doesn’t seem to be many used canoes in this size category. Not...

    A Legit ‘Expedition’ Hull Material

For clarity, I have 3 weights for my Magic: 1. Factory Weight = 28 lbs 2. Field Weight = 34 lbs 3. Tripping Weight = ?? (don’t remember what my carbon paddle and fishing pole add to the field weight). 🙂

    A Legit ‘Expedition’ Hull Material

Well I was all gung ho about this expedition Kevlar layup, until I realized how fragile the Gelcoat is. A thicker Aramid hull seems like a good idea. Covering it in fancy colored, crumbling crack prone layer seems more appropriate for a surfboard than a tripping canoe. Pretty just isn’t that...

    A Legit ‘Expedition’ Hull Material

I kicked this around a little and sure, one will baby a light canoe. But planning for things to go wrong can mean the difference in surviving or thriving and death or misery. I plan to be careful, like always. I wet foot, land parallel, don’t push the whitewater runs. What happens when I...

    A Legit ‘Expedition’ Hull Material

I don’t run whitewater when I can help it. I line some, when it looks right. I haven’t had any catastrophic failures, but don’t want any either. My experience has been in somewhat tame, well known waters. Sketchy portages around rocky areas gives me pause with a UL boat.

    A Legit ‘Expedition’ Hull Material

My Swift P14 is “Expedition Kevlar.” Unfortunately, it’s about 12 lbs heavier than I consider ideal for portaging with a modestly loaded pack. The cracking of the gelt coat can also be problematic. I was just wondering what lighter-weight hull material folks would consider adequate for off...

world of maps came through by telephone. Index didn’t work on my Apple. I’ll definitely check out some other sites.

Yes, but here is the index for area 53. I can’t read a thing. Cross referencing to a legible map. Here’s what clicking a desired sheet (any sheet) returns.

Im looking for the Armstrong 1:50,000 NTS map. Seems to be unavailable from World of Maps, Maptown, etc. Sad if paper topo map products are going away.

    Camping with no tent, hammock

Still trying to trim my load. Considering sans tent. Saves about 7lbs with footprint, vestibule, etc. I would still take my lightweight tarp. Anyone else do this for summer trips?

I’m having a hard time finding a good online source for NTS maps. I know I once had a good source, but can’t find the site. Anyone have a good current source?

Ontario Crown Land non-resident camping permits

Is the tent receipt still acceptable in lieu of a permit? Seems like a huge leap in faith to head out on a trip without a permit in advance.

    Patching Gelcoat

Added some green flakes. Seems like it will hold.

    Patching Gelcoat

I’m wondering if thickened Gflex is good for patching gouges in Gelcoat boats. The soapy, crumbly nature of the coating is what concerns me.

Load weight and trim and it's effect on stability.

The narrow bow of a tripper like a MNII can create instability without a substantial cargo load. The front paddler is often cramped and the angled hull design lends to tipsiness. It’s consistent with the purpose of the craft. That’s where a big dog actually comes n handy. You just need a...
