    Self Inflating Pads

Looking to replace my self-inflating sleeping pad. It’s never been wide enough for comfort. I’m sold on the self-inflation feature, but most newer pads don’t use that method. I read a recent thread about sleeping pads and lots of recommendations but no self inflators. I want a 25” wide...

    Getting in and Getting out

I always have a pack of some kind in front of my seat. Daypack or fishing gear. I step over the pack, putting downward pressure on the gunwales to keep it level, then put my butt in the seat. My other leg follows. I used to go a moving entry like Steve describes, back when my balance was...

    Sylvania

Like every place south of the border, Sylvania is best after 10/1. It can be magical after he leaves change. Never a true wilderness, though.

    Pre-trip Tune Up

We’re contemplating a BWCA trip in two weeks. Glad my dog is a laid back canoe veteran. Thinking about leaving the double blade at home. The single blades are definitely easier on my hands. Hands are my weakest factor this year. I’ve been testing various compression gloves and braces. Found...

Anyone heard of a canoeing cat? My next project?

    Solo Canoe for Dogs

I’ve been looking for the optimum solo canoe for dog duty for a decade. The trouble is, optimal dog comfort makes for a slow boat. The best for a dog is indeed a tandem. But with all the sleek solo canoes I’ve had, it’s hard to settle for dismal performance. The Nova Craft Prospector 15 I...

    Quiet Blade Shape

Took the girl out to play hide and seek with blue herons and one bald eagle. The herons make a blood curdling noise when surprised on the perch. We got pretty close to a couple just lightly swaying with the bending branches explorer. It is quieter on the stroke, but like swinging a...

    Quiet Blade Shape

How deep must the water be to use that style paddle? I suppose one could partially dip the blade if not too awkward. I do remember seeing a short beavertail at canoecopia. Badger paddles. Might check the Bongo paddle for backwaters around here. Hard to do downriver trips in ohio...

    Quiet Blade Shape

I do palm roll with a straight shaft. Back in the day when I bowhunted, I did so mostlyin a medium sized river where current was brisk. I used whatever paddle and don’t remember being concerned wih more than crossing the stream and not missing my takeout on the other side. That area’s an...

    Field sharpening

I find that only my fishing knife requires touch up on trips. A steel does fine until I get home. I used to take a small Arkansas medium stone, but no longer. A hard carbon steel blade will hold up better than stainless.

    Quiet Blade Shape

It’s possible my ZRE is too short. I always thought if I ever get another, I’d extend the handle by an inch or two. The NWS is wider than the magic. Maybe the blade’s not going deep enough. I’ve not yet tried a wood paddle in the new canoe due to my hand problems, but will tomorrow.

    Quiet Blade Shape

The shown area causes turbulence on the surface. The BB paddle is much quieter (also much heavier).

    Quiet Blade Shape

I had a beavertail that DID seem easy to quiet back in my tandem days. Not great on shallow streams and marshy areas, however.

Maybe it is quiet, but not noiseless. Be interested in learning what hunters prefer.

    Quiet Blade Shape

I was out paddling some still water at sunrise. Bass boats were here and there, and I tried to pass without disturbing the water, no noise. It became a game, getting as close as I could before the fisherman noticed me. My blade is a bent shaft ZRE WW, not real quiet, no matter how careful with...

    NW Solo Tested Loaded

Finally got my new tripper out to get the feel with a known load. With 5 gallons of lake astern, the load is about 300 lbs, about 35-40 lbs under my summertime one-week tripping load with Bogan. Maximum recommended load is 340. Not as fast as the Magic, it’s still fast enough and a good...

    Must have medical items?

I have a prophylactic prescription for antibiotics, which I carry on trips. It’s for a particular condition that really requires immediate hospitalization in an acute flare up, but beggars can’t be choosers in the bush.
