The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

Gumpus, these are bents or straights? If bents, what angle(s)? Is this comparison for single-sided correction stroking or H&S?

Same. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Mike Galt Lotus Caper Canoe for Sale

The canoe is a Lotus Caper, which in my opinion was Mike Galt's best solo canoe. I've owned one since 1986, and I've changed the title to specify the model and maker. It looks to be in great shape.

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

With this thread topic in mind, I took three paddles of widely varying shapes on the NW CT trip last Sunday: a 48.5" (11 oz.) ZRE Power Surge 12° carbon outrigger bent shaft, a 58" (22 oz.) Bruce Smith straight butternut ottertail, and a 57" (19 oz.) Patrick Moore straight carbon Cue. On a...

CTN Day Trip Report 8/31/25: Pond Brook, Lake Lillinonah, Shepaug River CT

It was a nice day and we were surprised at the lack of powered boat traffic. There was none on Pond Brook or the upper reaches of the Shepaug, but we did hit some on the return trip on Lake Lillinonah, some of which Keith captured in his second video above. I was joking about the "rustic...

CTN Day Trip Report 8/31/25: Pond Brook, Lake Lillinonah, Shepaug River CT

Keith was wearing a Go-Pro camera on his head during the entire trip, and has put together this 8 minute video of our paddle from the launch to our lunch spot at Roxbury Falls. Keith may be composing a video of our return trip, and if he does, he can post it in this thread.

CTN Day Trip Report 8/31/25: Pond Brook, Lake Lillinonah, Shepaug River CT

The first NW CT bootleg day trip was held on Sunday, August 31, 2025. The trip lauched at Pond Brook, down to Lake Lillinonah (the dammed Housatonic River), and up the Shepaug River to lunch at Roxbury Falls. In attendance were Scott (@ScottS) in a dark green Wenonah Solo Plus, Keith...

    ZRE "Revolution" Paddle Blade

Could you post its weight? The GRBs are less expensive than ZREs but I suspect they weigh more than the ZRE pro lights.

An afternoon on Candlewood Lake, Connecticut

I'm going to schedule this trip for Sunday, October 19, which should be amidst fall foliage. I'm going to investigate starting at the Sherman Town Park instead of the Squantz Cove launch, which should add about two miles. I'll formally announce this trip in a thread in a couple of weeks and also...

    ZRE "Revolution" Paddle Blade

Has anyone used the new ZRE "Revolution" paddle blade? If so, do you have an opinion as to how it compares to the Power Surge blade and original Z blade? The ZRE webpage says about this blade: "Our newest and most efficient blade to date designed by Bob Zaveral and tested by Serge Corbin. The...

Join NW CT Day Trip 2: Twin Lakes, Sunday 9/7/25

On Sunday, September 7, 2025, I will be circumnavigating Twin Lakes—Washining Lake and Washinee Lake (meaning "laughing water" and "smiling water" in Mahican)—which are in the extreme northwest corner of Connecticut. The lakes are interconnected by a channel. This trip should be very accessible...

3 Scottish brothers set a world record for fastest Pacific row

It's not canoeing, but it involves a long trip in a boat, on water, with manual propulsion, and it's news. Plus, they are Scottish and want pizza and beer, so that's close enough. "Three Scottish brothers set a world record Saturday for completing the fastest unsupported row across the full...

    Dreaded Cancer, Mark III

Prayers and best wishes, Gerald. I'm going to save this and show it to my urologist, if necessary, if he starts spouting off about "you're too old" for PSA screening.

NW CT Flatwater Day Trip 1, Sunday 8/31/25

Al, this trip takes about 45 minutes with a bent shaft paddle. Otherwise, it takes as long as the slowest geezer paddles, which could be me. Probably five hours at a leisurely pace with a 30-40 minute lunch break at Roxbury Falls, which is the turnaround point.

The efficiency of bent vs. straight shaft paddles

It's not exactly a newsflash that lots of folks can be crappy at a sport even when they use the best equipment. The issue is whether bent shaft paddles are more efficient for forward stroking than straights. More "efficient" means, to me, that the very same person when FORWARD STROKING : (1)...
