That’s a special window. I believe it’s the one they use in their hunting blinds to shoot out of, so I always have that.

Glenn, I'm getting too old to make that 6 hour drive to the Adirondaks and put in a good day on the water on the same day. As far as the rack, I may experiment with a rack on the cab as it's hard to tie off the bow where it is now. Canube, the owner that conceived of the idea uses his for road...

    Triple Carry Portage techniques

I think you have it pretty well covered, but why worry about bringing such a light boat. Surely a good women can carry more than that.

This is my new set up. The box in my truck bed is an insulated sleeping "camper" made by Tusca Outdoors. They are in the business of making deer hunting blinds and one of the owners built one for himself to take on road trips. He liked it so much they now produce them for sale. It weighs less...

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

I apologize if any of my responses conflicted with your requested topic guidelines, although it looks like you got pissed off before I posted. If you post in the future be sure to put your guidelines in bold print so we will be aware of them.

    Outboard

Check out Island hopper outboards. They used to make small gas canoe motors. Now they call them kayak motors. They also have a lot of electric motors too. They have a 35cc Honda four stroke that puts out 2.5 hp. It has a built in gas tank and only weighs 19lbs.

Good all around tandem for flatwater and rivers

That is true when you have a level trim, but do the same thing when stern heavy and you will turn towards the side you are leaning towards. It's like how a motorboat leans when turned.

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Something to think about is a canoe pole is also called a "setting" pole. If I remember correctly it is called that because you "set" yourself in the eddy as opposed to doing an eddy turn. I would think it more closely resembles a ferry then a turn so you don't want too much angle relative to...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

I can get more leverage for heeling from the stern while seated because my weight is resting higher on the hull as apposed to it being on the bottom of the boat. You could try standing on the stern seat. Hahaha. I think keeping the upstream end of your boat as light as possible in a current...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

I was referring to how ballast affects stability in all situations. The more stable I am the more I can lighten the bow and the more I can lean for better carving. Both of which will improve your poling. The last sentence of your above post about getting more power by being further back in the...

New to me Portage Pal trailer

Canoe or no canoe it should be an adventure. I've wanted to get up there for spring skiing ever since I saw a magazine article about it 50+ years ago. My pop up camper had a Yakima or Thule rails attached to the roof with regular towers and cross bars. It wouldn't be hard to install if you know...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

I was always anti ballast, not wanting to carry any extra weight, but have done a 180 on this. Now I always take some weight. Even at just approximately 25 lbs it changes the way the the boat handles for the better. I'll even take it when tandem and place it in front of the stern thwart to...

Are you taking a boat, and if so, what are you doing for a roof rack on the camper?

Good all around tandem for flatwater and rivers

I own a Spirit II and have paddled Explorers, both royalex. It's been a while since I paddled the Explorer, but I think I would rather it over the Spirit II. I like the V hull of the Explorer better than the flatish bottom of the Spirit II. I'm also not a fan of the tractor seats or how they are...

Bow ballast for solo paddling: the more unusual, the better

This is what I've been using lately. It includes a lighter and fat wood in a waterproof bag, a small tarp and a small piece of a pad and about 20 lbs of split firewood.

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

I assume we are talking about going upstream so I don't think that is the case Forester. When you're paddling into the wind with a heavy bow there is less hull above the water to get affected by the wind and the more affected stern will want to weathervane downwind keeping you going straight. In...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

When I'm going upstream and the current wants to grab my bow I trim my boat more stern heavy. This exposes the bottom of the boat to the current where it has nothing to grab. With a flat trim I guess you could lean into your turn and carve with your bow in the direction you want to go but it...
