    Ice Glamping

Call it what you want, but when my canvas tent has central heating and indoor plumbing for my wife, it sure feels like glamping.

Best Sleeping Pad for Side Sleepers and Comfort on the Trail?

The foam pad not only provides more cushion, protection and insulation, you can use it to sit on or kneel on out by the fire.

Trip Report: Lac de Joux, Switzerland

It sounds like it was a great time, especially for what seems to me to be an unlikely get together. Kudos to the both of you for making it happen.

    It's National Pet Day

After being petless for 30 years I inherited two cats when my Mother passed away. One of them was very interested in the canoes when they were on shore so one day I threw him in and took him for a ride. This was the end of last season and he hasn't been out since. I'm curious to see if this is...

    Where Are All The Canoes?

Yeah it's too bad that quality canoes are hard to come by unless you go to a specialty boat shop or directly to a manufacturer. That certainly affects their popularity. I bought a Malicite and Duluth packs from REI in the nineties. Back then they had lots of nice canoes in stock. The REI in...

    Skegs on canoes?

Maybe, maybe not. Any time you change a design feature on a boat it changes a handling characteristic. So I guess it depends on what handling characteristics you want. I'm sure there are people who aren't happy with their prospectors but there are also those that wouldn't be happy in a design...

    Skegs on canoes?

I'm not an historian, but I agree with Benson on this when it comes to all around general purpose canoes. Specialty boats with swede form or asymmetrical rocker might be better at some things but I wouldn't say they are a better design. If they were better designs I don't think there would still...

    Hatchet or Saw?

Yes, I've processed firewood that way many times. It probably takes more energy than using an axe or saw and having less control it has also lead to injuries.

    Hatchet or Saw?

I used to mostly use a saw for cutting sticks to length, and rarely needed the axe. Over time I realized that it was quicker and easier to do that same job with an axe. Now, the only time I need the saw is when I want to cut a log that is thick enough that I intend to split it.

    Skegs on canoes?

I don't doubt that a skeg will improve control of your boat, but for what I do I'm not a fan. My view is probably narrow minded and stuck in the past but I believe if the Natives who invented the canoe didn't have one, I don't need one. Somewhere along the way I also developed the belief that...

"Momentum Matters": A Technique Essay by Marc Ornstein

Without momentum you are just using paddle strokes to turn your boat. With momentum you can use your hull to help make a turn. Freestyle paddling relies on a pretty level trim to raise both stems out of the water when heeled over to make turning easier. With my bow light/heavy stern style the...

    Photo of the day

These pics were takin from my house in the Poconos since the ice went out three weeks ago. This mature loon is just passing through and won't be around long. We've had immature non breeding loons stick around for the season in the past. The deer swam about 3/4 of a mile for apparently no...

POLL: How do you pronounce portage?

As a general rule I don't change how I pronounce or mispronounce words depending on where I am or whom I'm talking to. One exception to this is that I can go way overboard rolling my Rs when ordering food in a Mexican restaurant.

Kevin Callan: Should parks require mandatory education courses for permits?

I'm all for some kind of education when getting back country permits. I don't think it needs to be a class or movie though. I think you can cover the major infractions on a one page flyer that could be read in a matter of minutes and then be signed with an acknowledgement that it had been read...

    Hatchet or Saw?

Some people don't have enough respect for cutting tools. You have to plan to be safe, always considering the potential consequences of your actions. One thing to think about if you plan to have a fire is that you can hurt yourself gathering and breaking wood without a saw or axe too. I've hurt...
