I just got a Fishell paddle set up the same way - varnished blade and shaft, oiled grip (hopefully a bit easier on my hand). I can already feel the difference when holding the paddle! Cannot wait for Algonquin and the Adirondacks this summer!!!

Why the stark color difference between the grip and the rest of the paddle? Did you varnish the blade and shaft, but oil the grip?

Has anyone had any experience with extended tripping in a Merlin 2? Curious if it has enough space for a 2+ week trip carrying paddler plus portage pack and 60L barrel...

I did not just watch the intro video, so hopefully I am not saying the same thing - but a short / wide boat I would think would draw very little water; perhaps this is ideal for hunters or trappers trying to get into skinny, shallow creeks?

I am looking at a Merlin 2 that has Kevlar skid plates installed. I've always been against them on principle as I cannot help but feel they detract from the water flow over the hull. It's an otherwise awesome boat. Ugh!

Curious how everyone feels about Kevlar skid plates, and their impact on the paddling performance of the boat? Is the weight and paddling impact of the plates worth the abrasion benefits?
