First time builder Ashes Solo Trip

I’ve generally applied my RAKA seal coat on one day, then draped the cloth and wet out the next day. I’ve done some builds where that sequence was three days, that is, seal coat, drape, wet out, one step each day. My nephew’s hull was built that way, it’s been 9 years and it still shows no signs...

What Do You Do In Winter ?

Depending on the snow conditions, I think I’ll snowshoe in the ADK’s or my backyard. Same for XC skiing, at home we’re surrounding by the Albany Pine Bush. If there’s good natural snow, my absolute favorite activity is BC skiing, skin up, ski down, no tracks, no trails, preferably. If the snow...

Poll: How many miles a day do you paddle when solo in a tandem canoe?

I just chose 2-3 miles, but only because that was the closest choice to zero. I don't paddle solo in a tandem...ever. Ever since I built my first solo boat, I only paddle solo when alone or when the group has an odd number of paddlers. (or is that a number of odd paddlers?) If in a group, and...

FWIW, I always apply a seal coat It really helps to keep from starving the cloth when wetting out.

First time builder Ashes Solo Trip

Anticipating That “scary” lamination step is the reason why many would be builders never take the first step. Glassing is not all that difficult, especially with modern epoxy resins…plenty of time to work with and great adhesion. If you’re really getting the heebies about this, make up a test...

    Animal Behavior

Wow, cool story and glad it wasn’t me!! And I’m sure that those waders were easily cleansed of any soiling. Fascinating to think that the herd made a decision as to which group to shoo away…

First time builder Ashes Solo Trip

First things first. Really nice job stripping, it looks great!! Stems look good too, nice recovery. Like Jim, I too like to cap my sheer line. Gunnels can be nearly any material, just cut a deep groove…I prefer to use epoxy only, no screws. I once used southern yellow pine for gunnels, they...

    Seasonal withdrawal

This last season I only did two day trips with MDB, those two reinforced the notion that there would be NO wilderness paddling/tripping…currently 10 days into recovery from a bionic shoulder implant. So, no end of season withdrawal, that happened back in June. I generally don’t mind the end of...

November on the Allegheny River in Pennsylvania

Thanks for the nicely written and descriptive trip report. But I’m curious…What’s with the golf cart in the tunnel??

    Solo - fears and boredom

Glad to hear you’ve improved your solo comfort, especially at night. I’m convinced of the inverse proportion of night sounds…where a mouse creates the loudest noise and an 800 black bear strolls by silently! So what about the shoulder? I recently had a bionic shoulder installed, a week in and...

Stambaugh Sailing Skiff Build in Virginia Mountains

Nice work, U. I'm guessing by the size of that trunk that you plan to use a swing keel. I built my K19 per the plans with a drop in centerboard. I have since found out that to be less than ideal. It's awkward to deploy and retract. It drafts nearly 4-1/2 ft when fully deployed, there is no easy...

Sawyer 17’9” Cruiser on a diet

Thanks, Jim and Alan, I'll take it under advisement. Gonna be off radar for a while, tomorrow is bionic shoulder day, no typing for a bit, but I should be able to browse...

Sawyer 17’9” Cruiser on a diet

Jim, I forgot to ask Did you do any of your composite copies with the stems closed? The Sawyer has no tumblehome and slightly laid out stems, I think I don’t need to leave the stems open. Pretty sure it would pop off the plug with fully finished stems.

Sawyer 17’9” Cruiser on a diet

Jim, The polyester penetrated all the cloth easily, but definitely switching to epoxy next time. The hull shape has such a shallow arch and mild rocker that heat forming the foam to shape was effortless. We tossed a few 1 gallon ziplock bags filled with sand to hold the bottom stiffener in...

Sawyer 17’9” Cruiser on a diet

Mark, The polyester resin is easy enough to work with, with some caveats. Even with excellent chem vapor masks, it still stinks badly. For weeks! Good thing my shop is a driveway away from the house. Working time was adequate, but we had to always be mindful of working a sharp wet line. If we...

Sawyer 17’9” Cruiser on a diet

Bob, Yes, we wet out all 3 layers of cloth at once. It was tricky to see when the innermost layer, the carbon, was fully wetted out. After we popped the shell, I saw a few small areas that were not fully saturated in the carbon. There was little cause for concern, as more resin and cloth would...

Sawyer 17’9” Cruiser on a diet

And that’s as far as we got with it. I have a shoulder replacement coming up soonly, and likely won’t finish the build til spring. All that’s left to finish is a few thwarts and two seats. Sawyer weight 75 lbs SC-1 (Sawyer copy 1) weight 36 lbs Final weight likely 42 lbs. Son Josh wants SC-2 to...
